Sorry if this has been discussed, but I did run a search on it first, and got nothing. Has anyone installed one? Was it difficult? How much and where did you get it? Thanks.
Hey CV good question, i was thinking about swapping mine out for one, and could not understand why are Vettes didnt have this type, a friends Escalade has it so its definetely in the General's parts bin. Rob.
You can not guess how much of a time consuming job you are getting into on installing a OEM type compass rearview mirror on your C5 (see my sig). Think Plug-n-play as in Microsoft. Although it seems that every Metro comes with this mirror, it is a nightmare to install. Good luck.
I have the Donnelly mirror with compass in my 99 for 2 years now, and love it.
It is a green colored display, but it is so far away from the rest of the dash,
you can hardly notice the difference. The "guts" of the compass are actually attached
to the mirror, and are barely visible from outside the car, as the sunstrip in the upper windshield
hides it.
Install was simple, a 10 minute one-wire job. The mirror has maplites,
but if you need them to act as courtesy lites when you enter the car, then the
install will be a horror show.... very difficult . I skipped that feature, and
the maplites work with the individual switches just as stock.
I purchased mine from Summit Racing. The brand they sell is made by Donnelly but it is marketed through ****. They have 4 versions available, I purchased the one with compass, outside temperature, map lights, and auto dimming. The price was around 229.00, the install was pretty simple except for routing the temperature sensor. As far as matching the interior lighting it is pretty close but not an exact match, the mirror readout is a little darker. And as earlier stated the courtesy light feature will not work, I even contacted Donnelly to try and get further information, no luck, all I got was "might be included on later design" :yesnod:
Got one (used) at Carlisle for $35. It is a Gentex brand, Auto dim, with compass and outside temp display. Have not yet installed, should not be a big deal, but have to wire outside temp sensor.
I installed one in my 2000 and was not that difficult. Map lights work like they should (when doors open and via button), dims when you turn the headlights on, etc. Installed one in my truck as well. Units with map lights are wired a bit differently. Donnelly or Gentex (Mito) can tell you the wire pinouts.
My mirror does not have outside temp. As I have in-dash readout, there was no need.

any part numbers etc????
I need one of these as I have it in my Silverado and get VERY used to this JUST in case I lose my place :)
Listen to jimhild in the post above and go with Ernie for the whole deal. Bag the temperature deal, use his harness + Donnely mirror and it is very simple.
