I am needing help with a issue that I ran into tonight with my leaf springs I have a set of 18x13 CCW Classics for the rear and as I was test fitting them I lowered the car down off the jack and the leaf spring is rubbing on the innner lip of the rim. I was tempted to notch out a small piece of the leaf spring to see if that would solve the problem but didnt know if it would effect the rigidity of the leaf spring. I did mention to Chip at CCW that im running the L5 rear fender flares on the car so im hoping it doesnt have anything to do with the offset. The car is lowered in the rear so my question is .... has anyone had to modify there leaf springs to run a 18x13 wheel in the rear on a lowered C5 ?? I know there a few guys on here running the same setup im running with the L5 fenders so hopefully they will chime in.
I just talked to John about this has I don't have any knowledge of the subject. Basicly I got that it was common on tubed cars running 18x13's. The main cause is from lowering with bolts as it pushes the leaf spring closer the wheel the more you lower it. This can be correct by trimming the metal end caps on the spring where they flare up twards the inside of the wheel. You can also fix clearance by adding more negative camber or a combination of the two. He also mentioned something about removing some of the suspension bushings to lower the car instead of just using the bolts. All these will help fix the clearance issue.
I was going to try notching out the end cap of the leaf spring to see if it would clear but I didnt know if it would hurt the leaf spring or not. I dont see why it would considering I would take off about a half inch. My car is lowered all the way down on the stock bolts ...I raised the car up with about 7 threads still showing and was still hitting the wheel. I really dont want to go with spacers since the wheels stick out perfect to the fender line but I might consider that also if I have to. So should I cut on the leaf spring?
