Default How to replace the PS pulley

Does anyone know where I can find a thread or article with pics, that shows how to replace the PS pulley. We broke mine and I just got the new one.

Thanks
Mike

To be honest,I always just remove the whole pump/bracket assy and change the pulley off the car.Much easier,no need to mess with the ABS either.Do NOT leave the two bolts out that go behind the pulley into the bracket, you will see what I mean when you pull it.You will be very upset when you get it all back in place and find out you have to remove it all again

Having lots of experience now with power steering pump replacements, I can offer a couple tidbits of advice:

1. remove your pump to replace the pulley
2. buy a new pulley off of the 2005 C6 vettes. They're metal and they're slotted so you can get to the bolts behind...plus they don't break. GM # 12568997
3. go down to Napa Autoparts and rent a GM PS pulley tool that you can remove and re-install your pulley. Cost was $10 a day plus a security deposit.
4. If you track your car, I recommend you install a Z06 PS cooler while you're in there mucking around.
5. Don't lose the O-ring on your high pressure hoses.
Cheers,
John

Thanks John,

Last night I tried to remove the pulley with a center hub puller, and the notch on the pulley just broke off (so cheap). Now I had a problem...How to get the pump out???

I had no choice but to break the pulley, so that I could get to the bolts behind the pulley.

Now I Tried to get a puller on the outside of the pulley with the pump out, and again the pulley broke. All that is left is the center hub of the pulley, is still in the pump. How do I get this out?.

I tried to get a C6 pulley, but I could not get one for a couple of days, and I just want to get the car running.

If you've broke off the outer lip on the pulley hub, then you have only two choices: 1) thoroughly plug up all the holes and carefully use a grinder or hacksaw to cut the pulley hub off or, 2) replace your PS pump and this time use the proper tool to install/remove the new pulley.

That happened to me as well. I ended up breaking the pulley to get to the bolts behind it. I had to take the pump to a machine shop to have the remaining piece removed from the shaft. Also, its a lot of work using the install tools to put the new one on again. I didn't know that the '05 pulley would work...that needs some serious looking at before buying the new pulley.

Well I found someone who could remove it for me. However, in trying to install it along with the new pulley, I found that the shop had stripped the PS shaft. I could get it on most of the way with a lot of force, but not all the way.

Does anyone have a pump, or any other idea?

At this point I just wanted to be able to start up the car tonight, but that is not going to happen. If I dont hear back I am going to order a new pump and an 05 pulley.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

I can't take this anymore!!!!

It took me about 1.5 hours to get that pulley back onto the shaft. Its a slow and laborous process using the insertion tools that come with the extractor. Follow the instructions exactly and it will work but it takes a long time.

I could not, because the threads are gone. I need a new pump, or can I tap the shaft?

If the threads are gone, I suppose you could re-tap the shaft, but the insertion tool won't work any more. The pump itself isn't that expensive so if it was me, I would replace it. But, be very careful on using the insertion tool to put that pulley on otherwise you will be doing this all over again.

That is the plan, but I was quoted $320 by Los Gatos Chevrolet. They are the only place that I could find it in stock, so that I could install it on Satuday or Friday Night.

Any clue where else to look? I live in Santa Cruz CA.

Thanks. I just ordered one. You saved me enough to do it right and order a Billet Pulley

Default Bleeding my brakes?

OK...So last week I went ahead and ordered a new PS pump and a C6 Pulley.

They will be here tomorrow, and I will put the car back together tomorrow night after work.

I am sure that you are aware that the ABS control unit in front of the PS pump had to be removed in order to get the pump out.

Is there anything special, that I need to do in order to bleed my brakes? A friend said that it could be a pain.

Thanks

Yeah, I had that too...lol. You now have air in the lines. There are two things that need to be done now. You will need to bleed all of the brakes is the first thing. Second item normally requires a Tech 2 to activate the ABS unit but you can do it yourself in an easy way. Get the car onto a wet road and spin the tires. You will see the Active/Handling/Traction message on the DIC which activates the system and will help purge it of air. You will feel an immediate rise on the brake pedal. Do this several times. Also hit the brakes hard enough to activate the system. If all isn't still quite right after that, bleed the brakes again.

I take my PS pump in and out all the time and do not remove the EBCS. If you're really fighting for space, unbolt the EBCS mounting bracket from the cradle so the EBCS can be moved slightly. But like I said, with the slotted pulley, you can get the PS pump in and out without messing with the EBCS.

I don't remember precisley now as mine was a couple of years ago, but for some reason, moving the EBCM wasn't enough room to remove the PS Pump. My '99 came with a solid pump pulley therefore there were no slots to get to that one bolt. I was rather upset with GM at that time trying to understand why you have to disassemble to the whole car(practically) to get one item off. I was joking about it such as having to start with the rear license plate and disassemble everything backwards till you reach the item you are after. I know they do this to save space, therefore weight, therefore mpg.

John,
Is the 12568997 pulley the same diameter making it a direct "plug-n-play"? If so, I'm going to keep that number handy as I will likely be working on P/S removal in the very near future.
Thanks,
Robert

WOW. So I picked up the C6 style pulley (12568997) yesterday from the dealer. They ordered it for me last week for $24.

Perfect. This made the installation so much easier

I cant believe I was actually trying to do this without it. There is no reason not to buy one.

CAR RUNS GREAT!!!

Thanks for all of the help guys!
