Default C5 fuel tank

Can someone explain the C5 fuel tank to me? When I’m crawling around under the car I don’t see an obvious gas tank like most cars have. I remember reading it’s a dual tank setup on each side of the tranny/diff interface? If so, then how does the fuel pump system work? Are there 2 separate pumps? An exploded view would be great.

There are two tanks, they are located behind the seats. You can see them from under the car behind metal shields. Search the C5 forum , there is plenty of information on them.

I dont have an exploited view, but this is the jist of it..

Single pump in the drivers side tank (there is an access panel to the pump bulk head in front of the driver side rear wheel) - Feeds to the fuel filter (there is a Y inbetween the tank and the fuel filter), the Y feeds the siphon pump on the Passanger side tank that keeps the drivers side tank full. (the y has a jet like fitting - small bleed off from pump)

The regulator is in the filter and returns fuel to the drivers side tank

Single line from regulator to fuel rail. Pressure is regulated at 56-58psi (give or take)

97/8 car's had the regulator on the rail (return line run all the way up front to motor)

late 03 and 04 have filter internal to tank.

hope this helps.

On the left and right of the car just in front of the axle you will see some metal protectors. If you remove those panels you will have access to the bottom of the tanks and the pumps.

You can see the two "saddle-bag" tanks in the illustration below.

They are the two silver-shielded sections sandwiching the tranny pan in this pic.

Authorchris, this thread might be 18 years old, but as a fairly new C5 owner I was a bit perplexed about how that dual tank system worked and your link helped me get a better handle on it..... Thanks!
