My transmission recently took a crap and I just picked up another tranny. I'm going to have a transmission shop do the swap out. Does the differential need to come out when they R&R the tranny? If so, then I may as well do a differential swap out to a 3:42 gear from the stock 2:73s
Let me know how you do finding someone in Merced to make the differential change. I live in Fresno and I couldn't find any one able to do this . I too am looking at a trans rebuild and diff change. Also you'll need to do some tuning on the shift points when you change the gears. I
have looked in having A&A, OC Vette, LAPD, and Synergy do the work. I'd like to have it done locally, but no one seems Experienced?
Removing the transmission on a C5 Corvette involves dropping the torque tube, transmission and diff. There are several threads where people have posted excellent how-to's and even if you are not planning to do it yourself, this will be informative as how complex this is.
Mike is a Forum member and he might help you out.
And yes, I did like you, took opportunity of the tranny being out to swap the diff to a 3.42. This is a no brainer while you have the tranny out.
The C5 Vette is different from, say, solid axle cars in the sense that it is a transaxle assembly, you have to remove the rear crossmember to access the gearbox and that crossmember hold the diff to both have to come out.
As far as which shop to go to is concerned, can't help you there, I did it myself (and I live in Europe !!)
DO NOT take it to a run of the mill tranny shop. They will eat your lunch on the bill and more than likely do it wrong. You do not need to remove the torque tube to pull the tranny. Also, take it to Rick above, he's changed a spark plug or two.

Yeah, I spoke to the original tranny shop that I went to and specifically asked if they had worked on a C5 vette. He said YES. I then asked if they had to remove the differential in order to get the tranny out, and he said no, it comes out just like any other transmission. I then questioned him again stating that I was pretty sure that it would have to come out. He then hemed, and hawed and stuttered, saying that he did one last year, but he couldn't recall what all was involved in the tranny swap.... I then thanked him for his time.
Hopefully this helps anyone out who finds this thread in the future and clear up some questions. Removing the transmission/differential assembly is actually a pretty straightforward process even on jackstands. Complete removal video:
