I have an 01 Coupe with 7500 miles on it. Last winter when I only had 3000 miles I noticed that when it was cold out the car did not want to go into reverse at all and was hard to go into first. To be able to get into reverse I would have to get it into first and rock back and forth a few inches and after several tries it would go into reverse. This all happened initially at 3000 miles and 0 trips to the drags.
Since we are getting into cold weather now , I am leaving the car in reverse when I park it in the garage.
I believe it is a clutch issue since if the engine is not running it goes into gear fine. After the car is driven any distance at all the problem goes away. It is just on initial start up. Any thoughts. Jeff
are you saying that it is hard to get in reverse again?
This happened to me last year, too, as the weather got cold. The issue was still there after the new clutch was installed in February, but disappeared as the weather warmed up. I have always thought of it as a "stiff" transmission due to cold metal and cold trans fluid. The syncro's just don't want to move. Sort of like my whole body when I get up in the morning.
It sounds like a slave cylinder problem. The first thing to try is bleed the clutch its the cheapest. If no luck with that then you need to check the slave. If you are having this done by the dealer or a garage, you may want to have them check the clutch, it is quit a big job just to get to the slave so as long as they are there the clutch may as well be inspected.
Steve, yea hard into reverse especially , but also first on initial start up . I try and push the shifter into gear and there is A LOT of resistance, as if the clutch is not disengaging. I also noticed last year that if I pumped the pedal several times it would then go into first. Then I would rock it back and forth on slightly sloped garage floor and then could get it to go into reverse.
Once I start driving almost no problems. Darn C5 clutches :reddevil
Had a similar problem that resulted in the dealer replacing the shift cable assembly and everything has been fine since then. I lived with the problem too long (mothering it as you all are doing), should have gone to the dealer sooner than I did. Sometimes, not always, the dealer is the answer. Give 'em a try...
