Default Intake Manifold Swap

Just out of curiosity. I've been really considering swapping my LS1 intake to the LS6 or the FAST (Which is the best HP/$?). But I was wondering what ALL would I need for the installation to go smoothly? I've been contemplating buying an intake off someone from this site but I need some more info. Thanks for the help.

Go with the LS6 intake as the FAST intake will be a waste of money unless you have a large CID motor. Plus with the FAST intake you will need to buy a new throttle also. With the LS6 intake, you will need a new coolant crossover set. They are pretty cheap, like $20 or so.

What kind of gains can be expected with a swap from the LS1 to the LS6 manifold?

Maybe 5-8 HP in that area on a stock motor. You will see major gains when combining the LS6 intake with heads/cam and long tube headers. I would go with long tube headers and a cold air intake first if you haven't already for better returns on hp/$.

Exactly right Phil....(Kromberg's statement concerning the FAST is not accurate....but a very common misnomer on these message boards)

Ive posted enough on this topic to fill a small phone book.

Use the search feature or just look under my screen name at other posts I have made concerning this topic. The FAST will make more HP in any application its applied....and a properly ported FAST will make double that. The key is good flowing heads to get the most from the swap (20-25 RWHP with a ported FAST and good heads), but even a bonestock 346 CID engine will show 10-15RWHP over an LS6 baseline (with the ported FAST)....add 5 more to that if you have an LS1 intake.

Tony

My LS6 gained a whopping 4.6 at the wheels over the LS1. I had cam and headers.

We have seen our best gains with a properly ported FAST.

If this is your starting point for "major" mods on your car, you may be getting ahead of yourself a bit.

I would think you should start with a fresh air intake ie Vararam, Callaway Honker etc. then move on to long tube headers.

You need to read and read and then read some more to understand what your changes do and how they effect power to your engine.
I would bet if you do just a Fast 78 you might not be happy with where your power curve moves to(based on your current mods)

This is not a knock on the Fast intake just that I think you have the cart before the horse right now.

All that said if the Fast is a GREAT deal buy it now, send it to Tony for porting and save it until your motor is ready for it.

Good luck
