Well I turned off my '02 Z06 the other day and instead of hearing the fans continue to run for a bit I hear a clicking/popping noise with the fans coming on and off. I grabbed a small flatblade screwdriver and adjusted the DaVinci fan controller to a higher temp (had it set to come on at 160 with a 160 thermo) to turn the unit off and stop the clicking/popping. I then drove the rest of the day without any trouble, but the car ran a bit hotter around town. Driving at 1:00am with 54 degree outside air the car was running at the normal 168 degrees. I then parked the car in the garage and tried to start it 3 days later and no dice. Battery was TOTALLY dead, couldn't even turn lights on. So I hooked up my battery charger and charged it up. Started fine now, but the fan controller was just running even with the coolant temp at 80 degrees. So I swapped a new relay in and the fans didn't run. So I waited for the coolant temp to come up to set the fan controller and it never clicked on. I had the coolant temp at 188 and was turning the dial back and forth all the way and nothing happened.
I got my test light out and started probing and I have power from the yellow lead and the red lead. There are two points where the relay slides into the unit that have power. (When looking at it from the pass side fender with the fuse facing the back of the car) the leftmost and rearmost have power. I checked all the connectors going to the fan and such, but everything seemed fine.
Anybody else have trouble with theirs before?
PS: The Haltech custom fan controller for $199 is a DaVinci controller :/
Using a 160 thermo and setting your fans to turn on at 160 is just asking for trouble. In the end you will burn out both your fans prematurely and carbon up your heads.
Why don't you call Roger Vinci, who makes the thing, and ask him. He is at (407) 292-4500. Please let us know how it turns out - inquiring minds would like to know!
