My 2001 6 speed, 85,000 miles, pings under WOT. I always use 93 octane (Chevron or Citgo). Otherwise running perfectly. I did a top end clean (decarb) myself about 20,000 miles ago (using the GM top end clean stuff that feed through PVC valve, and let sit overnight), if I remember it did seem to help somewhat.
My regular "maintenance" mechanic says he wants to do a complete top end clean (which is move involved than what I did, feeding misted water through the top end as well, for example), change the air filter and fuel filter, and then if pinging does not go away to see if a fuel mixture change is in order.
I spoke to a "tuner" who says the only way to get rid of pinging is to do a complete "performance tune".
What would you do? To be honest, I have very little knowledge of engines. Just love to drive my vette hard!
I got a tune from East Coast Supercharging (ESC) at Carlisle that adjusted the air fuel ratios, the timing tables, etc. It eliminated the problem I had on my '01 with 107 Kmiles that was identical to yours with the identical steps taken to self repair it.
Their tune stopped the problem

Thanks - I just clicked on above link, it takes me to "Vette Dr.", and NOT East Coast Supercharging. Are they one and the same?
Anyway - I called, no one answers yet. Can you tell me what a "mail-order" tune is? Obvioulsy there must be a bi-lateral exchange of some data - do they send something to get computer readout from my engine?

Reason: typo
The Vette Doctors , ECS and some of their affiliates collaborated in offering this social. They are independent companies.
ECS makes superchargers, has special head/cam desgned to maximize HP/Torque are tuners etc.
The Vette Doctors, England Green, Cajundude, collaborate with ECS and are authorized to install the ECS technology in states remote from Connecticut.
I have not done a remote mail order tune, but I believe you have to remove your "chip" and send it to them via a courrier, they reprogram and send it back.
The Vette Doctors are highly respected Corvette Tuners.
Before you get your engine tuned, check the MAF to see if the sensor wires (itty bitty resistors) are dirty. If they are the engine will run lean because the PCM thinks there's less air coming into the engine than there really is.
