I need some help guys. My '01 coupe has started acting up a little, I'm having a problem with the parking, driving and dash lights. They have a delayed reaction as to when they come on. The headlights will pop up and work but I have nothing else for anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 or 3 minutes. Is there a relay or something that controls these? This is becoming very annoying espescially at night when I don't have any tail lights during this time.
What do I need to check first? I wiggle and jiggle the swith and the stalk but this doesn't change the problem, they come on when they feel like it.
Its The Switch, I Had The Same Problem, I Replaced The The Entire Turn Signal Stalk. The Part Is About 240.00 From The Dealer But I Hear You Can Get It Much Cheaper From Gm Parts Warhouse Online. If You Install It Youself Its Not That Bad But The Top Torx Bolt Is A Pita Once You Get Through Tha Phase It's A Walk In The Park. Hope This Helps.
VETTE47, did you have the same problem with the lights coming on whenever they felt like it once the switch was turned on? I'd hate to spend a ton of money and it not fix the problem. Could it be anything else? My car only has 49,500 miles on it, I would think it would last a bit longer than this.

Any other suggestions? Does all of the power and amperage pull through the multifunction swith for the driving, parking and dash lights? Seems like a lot of power to go through this switch without some sort of relay set-up.

Yes all of the power runs from multi-switch out to lights. There are three seperate hot wires running into the switch.
Power is always hot to the switch, so there should be no delay when lights are turned on.
The actual connector is C209 under the steering column.
After searching the forum it appears that the concensus is the multi fuction stalk.
Sounds strange to me, I would have guessed at a relay.
But it sounds like a few people have corrected the problem by cleaning or replacing the stalk.
Anybody have a pictorial How To???
Onward to E-Bay...
No relay in circuit. Dash, side lights, fog and rear tail lights run directly off of battery and Fuse circuit #6 under the passenger footwell.
There are (3) hot wires for connector C209 under the knee bolster that connect to the multifunction switch.
Takes about two hours to do switch over. You'll need a set of torque bits that you use in drills (i.e. very short) to get the one of the two torque (T25) out of the stalk switch. You'll also need some torque and reverse torque socket to get the steering wheel shroud apart.
I would recommend disconnecting the battery before you start as the circuit is always hot and you could short something out.
Working on my Dads 01 vert 19k miles same sort of problem, Dash lights work on acc but not on key run, no fogs or running lights, threw a ignition switch at it to no avail, Was thinking it may be the turn signal switch next or bcm. No power to the fuse 6 under hood. Looks like ill order a turn signal switch next.

Slow down and diagnose problem before wasting anymore money on parts that you may not need.
The light switch is always hot. It is feed by (3) different power lines.
Check fuse # 6 under the passenger footwell. If the fuse is not blown out do the following.
Pull off the radio console and knee bolster. Under the steering column there is a bunch of connectors, do not touch any of the yellow connections as these are for the airbags and you could deploy them.
The connector to the far right is C209 and runs your lights. There is a thin orange wire at the end of one of the connectors.
Take apart the connectors and check the orange wire with a test light to see if you are getting power to the orange wire. If so you have another problem.
I have the service manuals with wiring schematics however I'll be at my sisters in-laws wedding today.
Drop me a PM if you're still having trouble and I can help you out tomorrow with it.
All fuses inside are good and hot, fuse 6 underhood which is fog is dead not blown, if I power it up fogs work but still no dash or running lights, every once in a awhile everything will work like its suspose to also. I orderd a new combo switch from dealer for 162 and will do some more troubleshooting Wednesday when it comes in. Thanks for your help.

Check on gmpartshouse.com for a part price compared to the local dealer. You might be able to save 30 to 40 %.

Fuse #6 is under the passenger side footwell and not in the engine compartment. That is what circuit all of the lights that are out run on.
Well I went and double checked and yes I do have a number 6 under the hood labeled as a fog lamp fuse 10 amp mini. There may be some inside as well but they were all good and the one under the hood was dead but not blown. i replaced the turn sig switch and all seems to work well now. Thanks for all the help just wish I would have came here before I stuck in the ign switch. Thanks Again Now I need to fix his code 1214? for the abs found some info on here as well for that.
If the turn signals work, and then not, is this also an indication of a bad switch stalk? I've had times sitting at a light with the turn signals are on, and they will stop working, then start up again, or flash at random times instead of being steady.

More than likely it is a bad hazard switch, which controls the turn signal flash speed. There also is a cam on the steering wheel for the turn signal switch to turn it off after you make a turn, but I doubt that's the problem.
I forgot to mention that sometimes when I turn my headlights on in the morning, the lights will pop up but not turn on. If I cycle the switch once or twice they come on. Also, I have a HID conversion installed, and once when turning them on they both flickered for about a minute or so before finally staying on. They have flickered at turn on a few other times but only for a few seconds, then they were good. I figured all this was just a quirk of the HID system.
And I've never pushed in the hazard switch, so I can't imagine that its worn out from overuse.

The signal lights are wired thru the hazard switch, read these threads.
