Default Rear Diff leaking, what should I look for

Hey guys, I am a newbie and today I noticed a small puddle of fluid under my rear diff when I pulled the car out.

I was wondering about what I should look for when I jack it up? Is there a common problem etc. I would like to fix it before it gives up the ghost.

I recently took the car on a road trip for about a 2 hr drive. This is the first time I did that and after that drive is when the puddle happended. Do these things heat up and have an overflow?

Are there seal problems?

I figured that with over 600 whp it would eventually give but I would like to understand the rear end a little

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I see from your profile that yours is a '01 Z06. That tells me it's a MN12 (6-speed manual). First off, determine whether it's leaking transmission fluid (ATF) or differential fluid (Gear lube). Most likely, it's diff fluid and is caused by either:
a. excess blow-off from vent, located on topside of diff,
b. leaky differential side cover seal (driver's side),
c. leaky axle seal (again driver's side), or
d. combination of any of the above.

All are common problems. The seals can be a DIY project if you're handy, and roughly a $600.00 repair bill if you're not. Do a search for "leaky differential" or something along those lines, and you'll find a lot of info. I just replaced all of mine this summer, both sides, but failed to document the procedure.

Hope this helps,

Mike

I took my car on a road trip across the U.S. and my diff started leaking also. I replaced the seals on the left side last Friday. It's really not a tough job, I just had a hell of a time getting the stud out. The job would only take about 2.5 hours if everything went smoothly.

So far, no leaks. Time will tell....
