Default marred/scratched main bearing

how much can you have before must replace... new bearing with 2 scratchs 1/4 " in from each side of bearing and it runs from start of "U" to end of "U", can feel slightly with fingernail, no idea how it got there, torqued down main to check with plasti gage and upon removing bearing there they were thoughts on this. rest are great with no problems

The bearing is line with a soft material so if it does not stick up (ridges from the scratch) you are probably fine. The crank journals are a different story.....they will need to be totally scratch free.

I'm not sure about the time and money you have into this project or how much you plan on putting into this project but any scratch in the bearing surface is a good location for problems to begin.

As you and many others on this board know the moving parts of our engines ride on a thin layer of oil, this scrtch could and most likely will effect the oil film. Also since you state that you can feel the scratch chances are the areas besides the scratch have been raised slightly. If you were to look at that bearing under a mircoscope it would be clear.

It's all about time and money but I would not use the bearing it could cost you more later.

P.S. PM I can show you a picture from our microscope of a "light" scratch from a roller bearing.

A roller bearing the rollers & the race are hardend and any size scratch will lead to failure. On main & rod bearings the bearing surface is maleable and a small scratch usually will not affect it. The crank journals are hardend and no size scratch is acceptable.
