I have a 2001 automatic. The gear shift indicator is stuck in the Park position. You can shift through the gears with no problem, its just that the little red indicator doesn't move off of Park. Does anyone know how to fix it. Thank You.
I have an '01 A4 and I have yet to see the "little red indicator" you are referring to? Is it in the area next to the shift boot where the digits and letters are? If that is where the indicator is, then you are probably going to be removing the center console to access that area, I have seen it removed and it only takes a few minutes. I am now logging off and heading to the garage........ I am probably too busy watching my HUD, and of course the reflection of my C-5 in store front windows and off of other cars next to me.
Have to remove console and bottom boot plastic to access
I had the Shift **** STUCK IN PARK. Had to remove the console and then CAREFULLY with a small screwdriver release the little plastic projections which hold the base of the boot to the underlying structure.
My fix for the locked shifter was to UNPLUG the defective Park Lock Solenoid. While doing this I inadvertantly loosened the bulb for the mode indicator. I never had to actually remove the boot just slide it up and out of the way. As I remember there is a small plastic linkage on the indicator. You will see it when you raise the boot. Watch the wires to the light as they are not very long. BIGHANK
