Default Rebuild Steering Box?

My car has recently developed a powersteering leak. I have located the leak to the backside of the steering box where the shaft is inputed. Is this an involved or pricey operation? Or would someone with similar experience tell of a fix. Thanks.

There is no "steering box". That is the Rack & Pinion assembly. May just need a new seal at the input (steering) shaft.

replacing this seal, is it PITA or something that can be easily managed? And would anyone have a seal part#?

labor is easy, the rack comes out in about 20 mins., once you've done a dozen or so

my guess is one of the lines is leaking, could be an Oring that has failed, you'll NEED an 18mm flare wrench

hit the area with some brake clean, pinpoint the leak

pretty sure it is the input shaft seal on the rack. only area that has fresh fluid on it.

I need to ask questions here within this thread too...My very high mileage '99 Coupe, the rack and pinion is becoming loose. With the engine off, rocking the steering wheel back and forth, I can hear clicking/clunking sounds from the steering unit. I've already been under it and with someone else rocking the steering wheel, determined that it is not the tie rod ends or anything else. The noise is coming from the rack and pinion. I found a place that rebuilds them or I can buy a new one. Thoughts? Also, any thoughts on the special tool needed to get the tie rod ends off or will something else work just as well without messing things up? Any additional problems getting the unit out of there?

No internal seals are shown as a replacement part by GM. Looks like either buy new assembly or get a reman unit.

You guys are the perfect guinea pigs!

See this thread:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...8+Steering+box

There's been a lot of discussion about putting the new and improved 08 steering rack in a C5. The consensus is that it will bolt in and is a better rack, but you may not get the full benefit without 08 programming. The 08 sounds like it will costabout $140 more than a new C5 rack. Anbody interested? Talk to Gene - maybe he'll give you a deal.
