Re: whining steering (sunking)
Yes, check your power steering fluid level. And QUICKLY! If you're low enough on fluid to cause the power steering pump to start whining you are in serious danger of "toasting" it. If you are low, find out why. Make sure you don't have a leak somewhere or it will happen again. :)
i have checked the power steering fluid and it looks to be ok...the whining doesn't seem to be coming from the engine compartment but an interior sound...

Re: whining steering (sunking)
Look underneath the dash area where the steering column goes through the firewall. Also check on the same thing on the engine compartment side. See if you can narrow it down while you (or a helper) slowly rotate the steering wheel one way or the other. Maybe a rubber grommet or weatherstrip noise where the steering column passes through. You might even try pressing on the rubber grommet while rotating to see if you feel the slight vibration when the noise is present. If you think you have a pretty good idea where the noise is coming from, try a LITTLE silicone spray lubricant. Use the little plastic tube and try not to get too crazy with that stuff. Good luck! :)
Hi: Believe its a known problem on some vettes. I think I read on the forum a while back that the bearing that supports the column down by the firewall gets dry and needs to be lubed. Mine does it now and then in the summer and I ignore it. Maybe c4c5 or c5 specialist will chime in. Good luck and have fun! :D :D :D

A noisey nylon lower steering column bushing is very common, and usually comes and goes depending on temperature. It is at the firewall incased in the rubber grommet and can be replaced by removing the steering shaft from the column and steering rack (intermiadiate shaft)
