I'm new to the forum (member) but have read all info you all have offered; well done. My question is in regards to handheld (Predator, Hypertech) tuners. It seems that the Hypertech is the only option for owners of '97-98 cars (don't get it) and as such I'm hoping to gain some insight as to it's value (usefulness; shift points, etc.) from fellow owners of '97-98 cars. Thanks
It's easy to use and easily reversible. I found it most useful for messing with transmission shift firmness, rev limiter, and fan cooling temps. I'd buy used before I'd buy new. If you have more advanced tuning needs, there are more suitable options, but for a near stock car it's okay.
There are comparatively few options for the early years because the market is smaller (fewer cars produced).

You are correct about the limited selection of programmers for the early C5`s, however, for slightly more money the Vinci-Crane programmer is superior to the Hypertech as it has many additional features.
Example: Adj timing, adj air-fuel ratio, and tunes for many of the popular head/cam combos in addition to fan temp settings, shift points and firmness, etc.
I had one when they first came out and returned it. It locked the PCM once on download, jammed with the second unit and had to be redone, and when it did finally download (3 units sent by Hypertech) it did not do anything for the performance, just lowered the fan temp settings.
