I'm looking at a C5 that has Transmission issues, grinding in a gear. I know nothing about C5's, are the transmissions behind the engine, or are they in the tube, or? Are they a bad job to change? What about clutches? Are they directly behind the engine?

The clutch is directly behind the engine like other cars. The transmission however is towards the rear, and is connected to the motor through a torque tube.
The idea is better weight distribution by not having so many heavy components toward the front of the car.
Neither the clutch nor the tranmission is difficult to change but they are certainly not 2 hour jobs either.
The trans is back by the diff, and the clutch is on the engine. To get the trans out you have to at least the rear suspension cradle, its pretty involved but I have not done it. Look at upgrading if you do it, RPM transmissions is a good shop.

^^ I agree. It's not inexpensive either, especially if you have to pay someone to do it.
