Very Strange Sound
Hi All - I am new to the forum but this is my second 'vette. Original was a '92 convertible. Presently own a 2000 pewter convertible - What a difference. Anyway - here is my problem..... I just finished an 800 mile road trip and the car ran great - I am now 800 miles from home. When I started the car the next morning I heard this terrible grinding noise - but only for about 2-3 minutes. This now occurs every time I start the car (cold, not warm). Once the noise is gone, the car seems to run perfectly. I have also observed that the charging gauge starts at around 11 volts and gradually moves to its (normal) 14 volts, reaching that number at the same time as the noise stops. I am thinking alternator but have also read on the forum about similar transient noises caused by the torque rod (?) bearings. Car is currently at the dealer (cause i don't know any local 'vette mechanics) but, obviously, they are having a hard time diagnosing. Anyone out there who has experienced a similar issue I would be grateful.....Am leaving on a 500 mile road trip tomorrow................Turns out it was the starter solenoid not releasing causing the starter gear to remain engaged with the flywheel...$600 later and I am good to go
