I know this sounds weird but here goes.
I had my car at the dealer for service, during which they replaced the oil pressure sensor, serpentine belt, healight motor, and machined the rotors.
I picked it up Tuesday night and when I got home it smelled exactly like a skunk, seriously. The next morning I went into the garage and the garage smelled like skunk. I opened the hood, crawled under the car, and thoroughly checked to see if I had in fact hit a skunk. Nothing found.
On my way to work I turned the air on, skunk smell entered the interior.
Git to work, popped the hood and started smelling around. It's not very noticeable on the passenger side of the engine compartment and I believe i have it narrowed down to the alternator of all places.
At first I thought the new belt was making the smell. Could it be the new belt or the alternator?
One thing is for sure, I did not hit a skunk. I don't think it's A/C related because you can smell it outside the car with the A/C off.

I'd be suspicious of any dealer that "machined" your rotors .... I'd bet they drove your car and hit a skunk ... any way to check the mileage when you dropped off the car versus when you picked it up ??
To get rid of the smell ... check out the MythBuster's site ... they tested all kinds of ways to get rid of skunk odor .....
mine did that same thing after they repalced the a/c and my belts, it took about 2 months to go away, and I tried every thing. I guess that it has something to do with the belts, no sure.

...I'll bet that JAMIE & ADAM will have your answer...GOOD LUCK
In all seriousness I just got back from a weeks vacation and the smell had gone away both in the car and garage.
BUT....when I drove it to work yesterday the smell came back!!!
So obviously I did not hit a skunk, nor do I think the dealer did while test driving (if they even did that).

This is what I was thinking. It may have something to do with the belts or the alternator. I say that because the smell gets stronger near the alternator.
Can I get some help here? If you have nothing constructive to add from this point forward please do not post.
We've had our fun so now it's time to get serious.
Is the serp belt on all the pullies properly? Perhaps it is slightly off, allowing it to rub and burn off. Did they replace the A/C belt too?
When they replace your oil sensor they take off the intake manifold, can you smell it around there? Burning gasket material possibly from bad install... perhaps they used that liquid gasket crap (long shot, but hey.)
Are you sure the smell is coming from only the alternator (or area around it?)
Who knows, just throwing ideas out there. One thing is for sure, dealer broke it, dealer fix it. Then once it is fixed, never go to a dealer again. They are better off fixing trucks, cobalts and astro vans.

Yeah the serp is on correctly. I wonder if they actually replaced it or if they just sprayed it with something tomake it stop squeeking. If so maybe the spray is whats getting hot and stinking?
Yes the smell definitely gets stronger near the alternator.
