It takes quite a bit of experience driving a stick shift as well as a good feel for the car. Simply, it's shifting without using the clutch at all. All you have to do is match the engine RPMs to the wheels exactly, then the synchros will mesh together smoothly. Some racers know this technique, as well as many truckers. Get it down, and the only time you need the clutch is launching from a standstill. :D
Even if you learn this technique, isn't this harder on the synchros? Also wouldn't you typically have to shift slower to get the 'feel' and rpm's perfect? Speed shifting sounds faster.
It's probably faster on the zo6 since the ratios are tighter, but on my coupe it takes a bit too long for the revs to drop enough for the next gear. I can actually shift faster with a bit of clutch. I believe perhaps the PCM could be programmed to speed up the rpm drop but haven't tried this. The tranny doesn't grind a bit. Just preload the shifter and let off the throttle. As soon as the next gear engages again hit the throttle again.
I taught my son to drive on a 4 speed stick when he was 9 years old. The heavy duty clutch took too much effort for him. He had a natural ear and feel and soon mastered the upshift as well as the downshift without use of the clutch.
To do this manuever with no damage....it has to be done slowly....if you don't do the rev matching properly, then you will put stress on the synchros.
Yes nearly any car with a stick can be shifted w/o the clutch.... but to be done right it is something that requires a touch and feel for the car. It would not be something you could do at WOT during a dragrace! A power-on upshift w/ clutch ..yes.... w/o the clutch I say impossible!!
Shoot, I hardly ever use the clutch....on the CR500 :-) That is unless I want to go instantly into warp speed and have my butt grow teeth to try and hold me on the bike. Then all I have to do is come out of a turn, go WOT and fan the clutch. Talk about instant adrenaline overload.
Drive the POS-B2200 the same way :-). The vette gets driven with full use of the clutch.
