98 model, drove last week, has new batt., started car dic says "charge system control". Batt guage not charging, no power steering. Alt. failure?
Why no power steering?
Thanks,
Thom
I could not believe my eyes, the belt is off. Looking in the owners manual, the routing shows the belt crossing over itself, are there 2 belts? Is there an easy way to put this back on? Is there some idler pully or something that could have moved?

There are two belts. One is the serpentine and the other is for the AC compressor. If it wore out and came off, then buy a new one and install it. Its not that hard. The tensioner pulley has a spring in it. Now the question is why it came off if it wasn't wore out or broken? Check all the various pulleys for smooth operation...spin the alternator, tensioner, power steering pump and so on. Look closely at the harmonic balancer on the crankshaft and make sure it hasn't come loose.
air compressor belt still in place. Serpentine belt hanging, things turn good.
Belt is slick with a lot of cracks. Car has 80K miles I am 3rd owner don't know if it has ever been replaced. I don't know how much movement there should be in the idler pulley but there is none. If you route the belt back in place it only goes up to the bolt on the pulley by the oil filler neck.

Route the belt into all of the pulleys first, then while keeping the tensioner pushed, push the belt over the water pump LAST.
Next, go to you're favorite auto parts store and order a Goodyear Gatorback replacement belt.
Just as a suggestion and preventative maintenance you may want to do the A/C belt and also replace the tensioner.100k use to be rule of thumb at dealer i worked at
Not saying to but, you never know whos problems you bought being third owner. That was probably the original belt.
Thanks, I looked at the other belt and it looked the same, cracked real bad and the tensioner has no movement, at least by hand, was planning to replace like you suggested. I guess it was good the belt came off at home, I would have perfered it to have be caught in a PM., but. Is there any slack at the alt. to reinstall? It came off when I drove it into the garage, if it came off that easy I though it might go back on with the same ease, no such luck.
Thanks again

Sorry about that, this is not the first thread about a missing belt being the cause of a problem.
I guess you do have to watch what you post on the forum it always seems that somebody is out to bash ya
Anyway good luck with the install
