Default Question about tuning

I was talking to my local performance shop Pur Performance about tuning my car. I asked them what they normally used to tune, and they said LS1Edit or EFILive. They said they only use LS1Edit upon customer's request. Anyways, EFILive no doubt. But I was wondering, does this mean I will not have to buy my own EFILive being that I think they have a corporate edition tuner?

As long as they don't lock it you can still download the new program with LS1 Edit although you have as many options to tune the car.

If am understanding you correctly you should not have to buy your own personal software/hardware if a tuner already has it. The only thing you should have to pay for is the PCM license and what ever they charge to do the tune. The PCM licenses normally run around $100 regardless of software maker

When you pay a tuner to tune your car, they use whatever software they have, they make changes, and upload the new tune to the PCM, charge you money, and you drive away. At no point does the customer need to purchase any software.

If you wish to buy the EFI-Live software, then (assuming you take the time to learn it), you can then tune the car yourself, and make adjustements anytime you feel like it. You don't need to pay someone to tune it.

Lastly, if you do decide to buy your own software, after a tuner tuned your car, it usually does not usually matter what software you have, or what the tuner used to tune it, unless they installed a custom operating system, and/or locked the PCM.

If there is a custom OS, then you would need to use the same software the tuner did.
If the tuner locked the PCM, you won't be able to do anything with it, no matter what the software is...you'll need to have that tuner unlock the PCM, or what most do, just buy a new PCM (It's not that expensive), and start over.
