I have been using K&N filters forever & have always trusted their qulity & performance. I have seen some advertisements for other high flow filters. I don't recall the names, but I think one is blue in color & another does not require oil after cleaning.
I was just curious if there are any better options in the filter area than K&N, or if I should just stick with them.
K&N is a good filter and IMHO you should stick with it. I think SLP is the brand of filter you are referring to. I am one of the more conservative members of the Forum so if you are looking for a more radical intake set up others will chime in. IMHO a K&N w/Z06 airbox is all you need
All of the oil gauze filters require the same care that you give your K&N. I've used them for years by the way and never had a MAF get coated with oil. Cleaning and oiling sparingly are the keys. Many people either install them and let them go for xx,000 miles or over oil them and contaminate the MAF, then blame the filter.
There are now a myriad of after market companies offering the oil gauze filters besides K&N. I don't care for the K&N customer service, so I now prefer S&B filters. They're a smaller company with terrific customer service. They'll even custom build any filter to your specs, something K&N will not do. S&B is used by many after market intake companies as well.
Since so many people don't oil the gauze filters correctly, a new market has opened with dry media type filters (not paper).
I doubt that neither style will provide any benefit over the other except in easier maintenance.
I'm with chemdawg99...I had a BLACKWING w/ ice box cover on my Z16, but got codes...mostly due to my car being an '04 and I'm at 5,200 ft altitude, I'm sure. I reinstalled a slightly modified Z06 intake, drop in oil gauze filter and a smooth SLP bellows. It doesn't look as trick as the BLACKWING, but it sounds as good, runs as good and I get no codes.
I would stay with the stock paper filter. The lower restriction filters flow more air, but according to a study I saw, they also flow a lot more dirt for a given time.
