1999 Overheating?
My problem started with the surge tank. I got a warning that my coolant level was low. I found the leak at the surge tank. I replaced the tank and refilled the coolant with Peak 50/50. Autozone didn't have Dex Cool. How important is this? Now I am paying attention to the coolant temperature which is running up to about 240 sometimes. I can't find a good answer for what the normal range is for this vehicle. The needle, when it is staight up is about 220 and I am thinking this is supposed to be about normal. I am not used to seeing these kinds of temperatures and am seeing some posts with similar questions. I am beginning to think that maybe my sensor is not reading correctly. When I run the vehicle the first time of the day I get these high temps but if I stop and wait a couple of hours and run it again it may stay around 215-220. It doesn't seem to matter whether I am running the air conditioning or not. I have purchased a new thermostat but haven't installed it yet. Does anyone have any thoughts about what I should try?

You are okay: The low speed cooling fan is commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 108°C (226°F). It is turned off if the coolant temperature lowers to 104°C (219°F). The high speed cooling fan is commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 113°C (235°F). It is turned off if the coolant temperature lowers to 108°C (226°F). When the A/C is on and the coolant temperature reaches 85°C (185°F), the low speed cooling fan will be turned on at vehicle speeds less than 56 kPh (35 mph).
When I have my A/C on, I don't run above 210-220 F.
With Peak, you will have to change at 2 years instead of 5 years.

Thanks for the reply. After reading through the procedures about filling with coolant I think maybe you are right about trapped air. Since air will cool differently that the coolant mix, maybe that would at least partially explain whiy I am getting such a variety of readings that don't make sense. At least I didn't mix the green stuff with the amber stuff.
