Default gm ring job

hey guys how many hours do you think it takes to do this ring job on these oil burners?whats gm paying out on this one?could be like 40 hours allocated @ around say 75 an hour?thats 3k with no parts yet, aint it?any body know for shure?so if gm picks up the parts and dealership pays out 25 an hour to a service tech then that should leave about 2k profit for the dealer correct?am i in the ball park on this.there are good reasons i need to know but i wont go there.thanks trypower.

A dealer just finished my '01 at a leasurely rate. It took about a day and a half.

Heads off, loosen front crossmember at rear to drop pan, pop pistons/rods out top.

Dealer took 23 days to rebuild my engine and I know the Tech took a big hit on what he got paid. A lot of the time was waiting on parts or waiting for the speed shop (dealer outsourced the bottom end rebuild) to get there part done. Also when the dealer broke something, like the clutch master slave unit, they would have to order parts again.

This dealer broke the clutch slave, power steering resevoir, messed up the brake lines (between the master cylinder & the ABS unit) and also put several scratches in my door that had to be repaired.

The SM told me the total repair would have been $5k (not including the broken parts and re-painting)

Tech's are allowed 19 hours for a re ring................a job that should take at least 32-36 IF engine is removed.

Trypower, you are not even close to the ballpark :D ...Under warranty, the tech
gets paid 16 hours to replace the rings on a C-5...The dealer is reimbursed $55-65 per warranty hour depending on what part of the country they are located in...In other words, the dealer gets about $1,000 with approx $320 going to the tech (assuming he makes $20 per/hour),for a profit of $680 to the dealer for the ring job...Dealers dont make much on warranty parts, and the rings and a gasket set are quite cheap$$$...Then take into account that motor work ties up a lift, slows down shop productivity, and not to mention that the tech could make ALOT more $$$ working on something else which means more money in the dealers pocket ;)

Now on the other hand,if for some reason it was not covered under warranty and you had to pay out of pocket, you could expect to pay 25-30 hours book time at $65-75 an hour for a total of approx $2,200 with about $600 going to the tech...Now you all understand why we hate warranty work :U

Sound to me like GM should just replace with a short block and rebuild the blocks at the factory rather than stick the dealers on this.

Doesn't it SUCK that dealers can't work on our cars without scratching them!

Moritz Chevrolet here in Ft. Worth started mine on a Wednesday morning when they dropped the engine from the bottom. It was back in and all together including the two hour front end alignment by 3:00 Friday afternoon. I do not recommend you go look at your C5 in the middle of this process, very ugly and I mean very ugly!

So far after about 400 miles all is good. No more damn pinging on hard 1st and 2nd gear acceleration. No more damn filthly Corsa exhaust tips.

I am very pleased. The mechanic said all went perfectly and to expect exactly no more problems. And that is exactly what I expect.

HERE YE, HERE YE!!!!!
I'm going to miss the "black box" days at Land Rover. Internal engine prob=put in a new one, internal trans prob=put in a new one.

Funny how you can compare the GM description of the engine operating parameters that make the problem noticeable ...

"The cause for this condition may be an interaction between the piston rings and the cylinder bore in vehicles that are operated at higher RPMs -- typically manual transmission vehicles driven in a manner where the engine is frequently or consistently operating at greater than 3200 RPM."

...and the sig pics on this forum and know exactly who will be in for rings. Drive'em hard baby!!!
