I'm looking to do headers and exhaust. What combo do you think would give me an awesome sound but not be too obnoxiously loud?
Slightly obnoxiously loud would be ok
I also need a setup that will be compatible with a future x-pipe install. Haven't decided whether to keep stock cats of go with high flow yet.

First off most if not all header systems come with an X-pipe as part of the system. There are many systems out there to chose from and the best way to find what will work for you is find some folks near you that already have these mods done and see if it is too loud. I have American Racing headers and B&B Bullets and mine is extremely loud. If you want something that is moderately quiet unless you put your foot in it then go with something along the lines of the B&B Route 66 type exhaust. As for the headers, it will be up to personal preference. There are many to choose from ; LG, American Racing, Kooks, Dynatech, etc.
But try to find someone that has headers and exhaust already done and see if they will take you for a ride and let you hear how loud it is for yourself. The other thing is that it will make a difference if you have an auto or manual. The automatics tend to drone alot with the louder systems whereas in a manual you can shift around the drone and keep it down. Hope this helps you out some.
This is going to prove my extreme lack of knowledge but can someone tell me what the order of components are from the manifold to the rear?
Is it:
Headers
cats
x-pipe
mufflers
tips
Are there 2 x-pipes in the configuration, like one just after the headers and another larger one after the cats?

There is only one X-pipe in the system and that is after the cats. Everything else is correct.
Jason, so you're saying the headers do come with a new after cat x-pipe? Sorry, I'm just trying to picture what I'm getting in my head.
you can choose to go catless or with cats. The way the exhaust flows out is it goes from your engine through the headers, through the x-pipe(if you choose to go with cats the cats will be before the x pipe but after the headers),through pipes over the axles and out the back.Best thing to do is google some pictures of an undercarriage of a corvette, or any car for that matter.
Yeah I plan on keeping my stock cats for now (if it will work), and possibly going to high flow cats later on.
Sorry for all the dumb questions. I've driven trucks since I was 16 years old. This is my first car ever and I'm finding it's VERY different from a mod perspective.

thats not going to work.that involves cutting and rewelding. If you decide to go with longtube headers, you do not have a choice but to get a matching x pipe unless you can custom fabricate one.I do NOT recommend this.

its the SAME exact thing just a car instead of a truck.strip the body off and the chassis and everything else is nearly the same thing.
