Help me with my Christmas list! My car is basically stock (see sig) and I need some help identifying good basic performance mods for under $500. I don't want to do anything drastic, but I do want to feel a SOTP difference in acceleration or handling. I'm a newbie Vette guy so help me understand what the mod is and why I want it.
No appearance mods, please, and I don't want to change tires yet or lower.
The very best thing you can do for under $500 is to get one of those Blackwing air filters from Richard at EXIT 28...he's got a great sale going on right now! Here's the thread:
OOPS! Didn't see that Vortex sitting in your sig! Perhaps the next best thing would be a Powerloader. This is controversial for an MN6, but I got it and am very glad I did!
SOTP difference is gonna be hard to do with the mods you have and a $500 limit.
An underdrive crank pulley might fit your budget. You'll notice more power and a freer reving engine all the way to the rev limiter.
An upgrade shifter is a great mod if you're not happy with the stocker. There are 3 to choose from now. You could pick up a tenth imo.
If your car runs hot, you could mod your cooling system. Lower temp. thermostat and fan switch setup is available. It will fatten up your A/F some which should help with your intake and exhaust setup.
I say spray it! Oh did you say under $500 well you can stretch it a bit. What's that you don't want to go too crazy? Then get a purge valve and just antimidate people all day.
Performance cost money, if you only have $500 keep it and call it a day!
I can understand where you're coming from Al but he's ready for another mod. And he's got some of the more affordable bolt-ons to consider.
BTW, you might want to look at getting the Autotap and MAFT setup. You will be able to dial in your A/F with this combo. I'm not positive there's a MAFT for 2001 models yet, though.
Toss the A&A noisemaker and get the catback exhaust system of your choice. This will give your car a real boost and help to evacuate all that extra air your getting with the Vortex on your intake side.

I respectfully disagree. If anything the A&A flows as well as a set of Indys. Besides, no one has seen any more than 8-10 RWhp from a cat-back. I bet the A&A is worth 3-5.
Headers! Get headers.... If you have a good intake, and you have a cat back exhaust, your still choking your engine with the stock exhaust manifolds. So get headers.... You'll thank yourself. :)

I wish headers were in the $500 range. I think they will be my next mod, although I got some response that say headers will reduce HP on a non cam/head engine??? Other say 15 rwhp. So I've got homework to do 1st.
For $500 I would buy an under drive pulley. $200-250 for pulley, $200-250 for install and I got SOTP feel.
2. (Used) B&B Tri-Flo Muffler System, on car for one day, customer said it was to loud. There is a small dent on one of the pipes, not visable when installed. $500.00 + shipping. Reatil is $895.00 + shipping. I also have (2) used quad tips for $700.00 Each + shipping. Link to photo of new system. http://www.westcoastcorvette.com/pro...il.cfm?iid=356

$500 for SOTP feel may be hard to come by. You have a good intake and there are no mods with real feel past that. You can accumualte more ponies, but, feeling them maybe another deal.
A Nitrous Kit for $500 is great...installed though, it will be much higher to have it done right.
Re: Suggest my next perf. mod--Thx! (RG in Dallas)
Headers wont reduce hp, but they can reduce low end torque depending on the size of the primary tubes. 1 5/8" primarys I believe give you more hp and low end torque. 1 3/4" primarys I believe rob your low end torque but gain you mid to upper end torque. I dont know how much headers cost for C5's being as I drive Fbodies. A good set of headers for my car can be had for $350 ceramic coated. Good luck with your choice!
