TOTALLY NOT TRUE!!!!....at least on my 02 this is the case.
I even jacked my car up in the front so that the gooseneck or waterpump inlet if you will was raised a little more. Still once I undid that T-Stat and housing......here comes the coolant....My guess I lost all of it...if not 3/4 of it....You see its simple logic here....the tank is up high on your car....the lines run from this to the block....Unless you plug up those lines first by removing them from the block to the tank...you will lose all the coolant in the tank.
Be warned guys....just a passing hint. One lesson learned that I won't be doing again.

I had read that in the past , but never had the ***** to try it and wound up doing it the "old fashioned way"!
You must have had a real mess to clean up! Glad you Got-R-Done!

oooopsss...Figured I was in the garage and know one would know.My problem really happened when I was dumb and removed the two screws to the t-stat and placed them just out of reach so I wouldn't lose them. Of course, once I popped the stat off and the coolant started gushing out....I couldn't reach the bolts to put them back in.....so I had to let the t-stat down for a few seconds while grabbing the bolts....that few seconds was all it really took to make quite a mess.
I would recommend to anybody to have a pan down below the car and any extra gallon of dexcool on hand cause your gonna need it. Be sure to go 50/50 min with the coolant and water too. Or 70 (coolant)/30 (water) max.

I don't think it does anything for performance.
Also you are going to loose about 2 gal. of coolent. give or take alittle.
when changing thermo.
