I have a 99 auto. And i have this annoying squeaking sound coming from around where the belts and pulley's are. I changed both belts thinking that it was coming from one of them. Well it did not fix the problem. Just wondering if anyone might have any helpful input as to what it might be. I was thinking that it might be one of the pulley's going bad I dont know?
Bad idler pulley bearings are a common problem.
If you remove the serpent belt and run the motor for a
minute and the squeak stops, replace that idler pulley,
otherwise replace the A/C idler.
Check the gaskets at the front of the H-pipe. If you see soot its leaking and needs to be repositioned or replaced. I had the same problem. Replaced both belts and tensioner pulley. Turned out to be the gasket. I never thought an exhaust leak could make a belt-sqeeking sound but it can.
Messed w/ my squeaks all last week. Several trips to the auto parts and finally fixed the squeaks. Found out that most auto parts don't know much about vettes and the Dealer is not much better or they act like they want you to bring it in than you buy the parts from them. Anyway it turned out to be both the tensioners on the A/C and the main drive belt. Bought both because I was not sure which one was squeaking. The main belt tensioner can be changed in 2 minutes but the A/C can be a bit of a challenge because you have to raise the car to do it from the bottom and there is so little room to get to the tensioner even from the bottom of the car. I have changed it from on top but it is much easier from the bottom. The diagram for the belts is on the drivers inner fender wall if you forget how it was on. Got my tensioners from Autozone for about half of what the dealer was asking. I have a 98 w/ 70k miles so I guess it was time to change them. Also did the brass Headlight motor gear fix and they work great w/no more ugly grinding or sticking of the headlights, also did the oil pressure sensor relocation about 2 weeks ago and no problems, so far working like a champ. I also did the vacuum line check because my blower motor was not blowing good and hard on high. Found my problem was a cracked vacuum line under the battery area, just before the hard plastic black line goes into the passenger door area. This forum has so much great info, the dealer must really hate us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I went through the same thing with my '98. I ended up changing all the tensioners but the A/C tensioner and idler ended up being the problem. My difference is that the dealer had all the parts in stock so it worked out OK. I'm glad you got the problem resolved!
Thanks to everyone that replied. I come to this website for everything. And I usually get a reply back very quickly. I have replaced the belt tensioner a year ago to fix a squeak. I just replaced the AC idler pulley thinking that was it well still same problem. I took the AC belt completely off and the squeak is still there. So I think I am going to try to get the idler pulley for the main serpentine belt tomorrow. THanks again to everyone. I really appreciate it.
