Wouldn't hurt. There's a return spring on the plunger (pin) inside that may be corroded (from water, moisture, etc). That spring is what holds the pin in the "out" position to allow the door to latch. It also could be broken though.
As someone said, what happens is that the pocket that the plunger spring resides in collects water from washings etc and the spring rusts away to nothing.
You can buy a spring assortment at home depot or lowes etc for a couple of dollars and replace the spring.
Easy and you do not have to spend $100 on the whole release mechanism unless you really have a problem with that assembly (not likely).
This took me about one hour to make the repairs.....Just as you said when I opend the plunger the spring was in pieces......The spring kit I bought was from home depot.....If you need to do this....You need to look in the hardware section at home depot for the springs they sell a multipack of springs for 3.50........ Again I wanted to thank everyone who replied to this thread.....Its guys like you that don't let pepole ROB us on fixing these cars as soon as they see a corvette.
Again Thanks you guys and girls on this site you are awsome.
mine would only open and close with the button in the console... when I found out it should close by just pushing the door closed, I sprayed the plastic pin with WD 40 and manually depressed it several times...
That was 2 years ago... I have recently noticed the door is getting a little stiffer to close...
I guess it is time for another shot of WD 40
