Default Halltech intake questions

I have a 98 C5 and can't really decide on what intake to go with. I really like the look of the Halltech but have a few questions about it.

What is the difference between the T-1 and TRIC. At Halltech's site they seem to only refer to the Z06. Will both of theses work on a 98? Seems the T-1 requires no cutting and the TRIC does.

Do either of these have high risk of water intake? I live in Florida and drive my car daily.

Seems buying from Halltech is more expensive than other vendors that carry these products. Anyone know a good vendor to order it from cheaper?

Can anyone post a few pictures of their Halltech's?

The TRIC is the cold air kit that requires cutting the shroud. It sits VERY low and I wouldn't do it if you are concerned about water. The Sidewinder T-1 is their non-cutting version and what I run.

I have the TRIC with the red kevelar MAG. I love this set up. It looks great and it really cooks as far as performance goes. The reason this product costs more is that it has more craftsmanship and better quality materials than other products offer.

I think the best place to get answers to your questions is Halltech, but I'll tell what I know. There is a difference in 1997-2000 and 2001-2002 intakes. The diameter is larger on later engines, so the parts aren't interchangeable. The T-1 (aka Sidewinder) keeps the air filter close to the stock location. The TRIC requires cutting the radiator shroud, since the air filter sits below the shroud. More cold air in this location, but also more dirt and water. It's not clear if the T-1 is available for your 1998, but the Sidewinder used to be. The risk of water ingestion is a source of debate. I have the TRIC, and I won't drive my car through any puddle more than 4 inches deep. If this is a concern for you, the T-1 is safer. I don't know of a cheaper source than Halltech, but check the Forum vendors. I don't have a decent photo that shows the install from the front. The only one I have is from the side.

John,

Take a look at this thread. I posted pics of my Sidewinder and some comments. I too have a 98 and bought the sidewinder used from another CF member, I dont know if the T-1 has any changes over the Sidewinder.

Hey John,
I've got the Sidewinder on an '01 vert, and not only does it improve your performance over stock, it looks great!
I didn't want to cut my shroud so I went with the Sidewinder.
The Sidewinder is designed for the Z06 but works well on plain old beautiful C5s too!

IMO, I would think you would run a greater chance of water intake with the Tric 1 because of the cut shroud.

You could also just order Halltech's Carbon Fiber MAG and hook up a Donaldson Blackwing to it.

No matter which way you go, you'll notice the improvement over stock.

Sorry, no pictures.

Good luck.

Regards

Hey John!

I've got the TRIC and yes it requires cutting the shroud, and the filter element
is only 4-6inches off the ground. There was a thread about the install, but I couldn't find it. Here are my install pics. Mine is a weekend car so, I haven't got
caught in the rain...yet

I've got the Mag and tric setup. The filter does sit VERY low, but I haven't had a problem and the car has been through some down pours. I try to avoid standing water like the plague, and I definitely DO NOT drive through water deeper than a few inches. In any case, I would not drive a C5 through water deeper than a few inches.

The halltech is a bit on the expensive side, relative to other intake systems, but its the sexiest IMO. And there is an immediate improvement in SOTP performance, and it deepened the exhaust note of my 2001 vert. Enjoy!!!

John, if you drive daily, where you live I strongly recommend NOT getting the TRIC........
Get the T-1, Sidewinder..........
You will be asking for a Hydrolock for sure where you live...........if you go with the TRIC.....
Better safe than sorry.........only a 3-5 HP loss over the TRIC.......and it screams from what i am told.......

As I understand the problem, torential rain is not the problem. It is standing water. The front air dam is only 3" to 3 1/2" above the ground. When you drive through standing water, especially with any speed, it will scoop water up into the area between the radiator and shroud. Because this area of the engine (intake) is operating like a vacuum cleaner, and this is exactly where the air filter is sitting, it will suck water and vapor up into the engine.
Water will not compress in the cylinder. Therefore it will displace the air/fuel mixture and increase compression. One teaspoon of water in the cylinder will cause the compression to go to 20:1. Boom. Hydrolock!
Please be careful and good luck.

Exactly. Don't drive through standing water and you'll be fine.

Here's a couple of pics of my setup. BTW, I love the Halltech and, for me, it was worth every penny I paid for it.

I've had my Halltech setup for awhile now and am very happy with it. I don't think I would get the Tric version on a daily driver though.

It's not really a 'kit' as it is what pieces you actually buy. For a 'total' replacement of the 'stock' air intake assembly it's 3-pieces.

1) The Red coupler attached at the throttle body.
2) The Carbon Fiber air flow piece
3) The actual TRIC w/MAF sensor

You don't have to buy all three together, but if you do, that's the package or 'kit' if you will...

Hope that helps

Thanks for all the replies and pictures. In emails with Jim at Halltech it seems for my 98 LS1 application they special make the T-1 and you need the MAF ends (76mm) to work on the 97-00 models. That does increase the cost but the MAF ends suppose to provide a HP gain also. Trying to sweet talk the wife but at a 700 dollar price tag it may take a few weeks of me being a good boy. Yes dear. ;)

Here is a picture of the Blackwing setup. If your not going to cut the shroud, this will give you the same performance as the Halltech for several hundred dollars less. The filter runs $225 and the air bridge another $179. I'm over in Argyle, if you want to see the setup on my Z06, drop me an e-mail.

Hi John,
I've had the Halltech system for about 6 mos. now and have had no
problems. I try to avoid rain but have been caught a couple of times with
no adverse effects. I have the pre filter to use for emergencies if needed.
I brought mine through LAPD and I believe I paid probably $725.00 (Titanium)
It came with a throttle body bypass and a red vacuum line (kit ??). The quality
of the product is outstanding and the preformance coupled with my Corsa
Daytona and X pipe has to be felt to be appreciated.
Having said all that and being born and raised in Fla. I know how bad some of
the roads can be and how hard it can rain (standing water is hard to see at night) so I would either buy the T1 or use extreme caution (in rain) with the TRIC. Either way I am sure you will like the Mod and Jim Hall and Chris are great resources for your car and easy to deal with. Good Luck
The Hub  :seeya
