Default smoke em out!

Had to make a hard downshift passing some cars today and smoked everyone behind me out.... went into 3rd @ about 80mph and have never seen my car put out a puff of smoke like that before.

Question is why? Rings wearing?

'01Z with AFR 205's and 224/228 114 cam.

could be rings, could be oil getting into the intake manifold, and also oil could be seeping in through the rocker bolts.

The 01 Z's had a problem with that. Many many engines were re-ringed under warranty. Are you the original owner? If not, you may not know whether or not that engine was re-ringed.

I have a late '01 built Z so it shouldn't be the re-ring issue.

I have 75K on the car now and only use a qt between oil changes.

I only wish I could have gotten a pic of the smoke that blew out I know a little puff is normal, but it wasn't just a little

I have to wonder if your valve stem seals were installed correctly. Oil smoke taking off from a light or hard accelleration is a common sign of valve stem seal problems. I know, had it on mine.

Since you have H/C it's probably fuel. My car uses no oil but has a G5-X2 cam, full boltons, and 42lb injectors. When I stomp on it it spits some fuel out the tail pipes in the form of a grey cloud (not white like oil smoke).

After a track event the back of my car is covered in gritty grey which is from running a tinge rich at WOT which is what I want.

It was a grey cloud... And the gas guage did go down about 1/4 tank when I romped on it

The rocker bolts go through to the inside of the intake. Oil can seep along the threads and get into the intake. It wouldn't be a lot but it can happen. The manual calls for adding some type of sealant on them when installing.

If this was the problem, it would also smoke a bit on startup after sitting overnight. He didn't say.

Probably not valve seals then. Do a compression check.

youd be surprized at how much oil can get through those rocker bolts.

also check the inside of your intake manifold or flip the blade of your tb to see if oil is in there.
