Sorry if this information is somewhere else. I need to install a clb on a 98 but I have read that it won't work properly. Can someone shed some light on this for me please?
I have read that CLBs don't always work on early years C5s.
I installed a Corvettes of Houston CLB on my 1998 C5 and it worked fine. I did get a couple of "pull key wait 10 seconds" notes, but they went away. I never bothered pulling fuses like the directions say to stop these messages.
Seeing your alternative (three questionable GM recalls), I decided to try one. It worked out fine.
Thanks It seems a recall has been done at one time, I get the service column lock-pull key wait 10 seconds message but the car will die if I try to move it. I pulled the fuses and it will not clear.

Does anyone know if the clb will work? 98 six speed column not locked fuel shut off starts wont drive, error message wait 10 seconds pull key, service column lock. Can I just install the clb to get it to run and drive? Then try to clear the codes?

You should go to the top of the C5 TECH forum and read the entries. There are about 16 pages, with lots of different CLB situations . I'm trying to get a grip on what I should do as well. I just purchased a 98 6spd with less that 1000 miles on it. I had the VIN run and it has had the first recall done (fuel reprogram). I do not have a column lock problem but I want to be proactive. From what I've read in the sticky on this subject, Chevy will not change the fuel shut off once it has been done. You may also want to call Corvettes of Houston in the AM. They sell the CLB and maybe able to answer your question. Also print out the latest recall. Its GM 4006C, and take it to the dealer. It says that GM WILL remove the steering lock up to 2/08 if you are having a problem, regardless of what # owner you are. I hope some of this helps.
I have a 98 6 spd with the clb. I get the "pull key wait 10 seconds" message occasionally. If you ignore the message and try to drive the car the fuel shuts off.
I usually switch the ignition to run, wait a second before starting to see if the code pops up that way you don't have to turn the engine off and wait.

Better then a locked column.
So I take it you have had the first recall done to reprogram for the fuel shut off ?
I have a 98 without any recalls completed on it. After reading about the column lock problem, I installed a clb from Thunder Racing last year. Thunder Racing had a notice on their site that the clb didn't work right on several 98's. Works like a charm on mine.
I installed the CLB in my 98 A4 in 2003 and immediately had problems after several weeks of screwing with it I removed it.
Then I took my car into the dealer and they wanted $400.00 to do the recall, they said my vin wasn't included.
So I went to leave and guess what? It was locked in their service line, I messed with it until I got it started and drove it home and called my wife's son who just happened to work in a GM dealership.
He picked up the parts at his cost and brought them over to me and I did the recall using the GM parts. A lock plate and harness K as I remember, anyway I've had 0 problems since.
BTW Gm did reimburse me for the parts when the recall moved up to my vin.

I also have a 96 with 6 speed and Thunder Racing CLb.
I get the "pull key wait 10 seconds" 50 % of the time.
So sometimes I am 10 second late for a meeting.
No big deal.
the CLB will work on all our C5s.
If your does not, then there's something else wrong.
Sometimes an additional relay was installed as part of the GM recalls in the passenger footwell for manual transmission cars. You may need to remove and bypass it if your CLB does not work. Also, be sure to check your fuses.
