Well I dont really know if something broke or my clutch totally went out. I was in 2nd gear at about 40-45 and started to ease into it to floor it and all of a sudden the rpm's went up and the car didnt do anything. I pulled over and the car wouldnt go into gear. I can put the car in gear without pushing the clutch in. I dont know if it's actually going into gear or not but I can go through all of them without it doing anything (whith the car running of course)
Ive heard a couple different things, input shaft, clutch and torque tube. What do you guy's think.
Just coiped this from the page when the guy sold me the car..
Does the shifter feel like it's doing anything, or just flopping around?
Could be broken shift forks, but I'd expect you'd have felt things
getting worse until it finally broke.
A clutch's normal state is "engaged". Even a failed clutch master or
slave leaves you with an engaged clutch. A sudden failure where a
clutch suddenly becomes completely disengaged is almost always
accompanied by unpleasant noises of the loud and crunchy variety.
So, it doesn't sound like a clutch problem.
Without hearing it first hand, a sheared torque tube or broken
input shaft both seem like possible culprits.
Well we just drained the tanny fluid and a piece of metal fell out, it looks like its a piece of a spline?? We didnt hear anytthing when it happened just the rpm's going up.
Do you have the normal pressure on the clutch pedal? If you do, its probably not the clutch. If metal is coming out of the trans...bad news. You might try blocking the front wheels, jack the rear off the ground and turn the rear wheels, listening for whatever you can hear in the transmission with it in gear....engine off of course.
Well we can see that the shaft is broken, we also took the rear diff cover off and when the tires spin it looks like it's out of round. What would that cost to replace, with us doing the work obviously.

Looking at your avatar, if you have a 10 second car with a factory tranny, you have probably been on borrowed time.
I have no idea what brand it is. I actually have to look into it more and see if it was even a hardned utput shaft orwhat. IMO, i it was, why put another one inifits just gonna break that easy.

I almost sense that we are talking about two different things here. So when you removed the differential cover, you saw the left output shaft broken? Or are you refering to the "input" shaft from the transmission to the differential? Post some pics please.

Thanks, now what exactly is that shaft called. Is it an input shaft or an output shaft? I want to order one Monday.
That's what I thought. Ok, so you broke the input shaft. The output shafts, are located in the differential. That's why I was surprised you broke the ouput shaft, and equally surprised that you had a 10 sec car on the factory transmission. You can replace the input shaft;however, you should have the tranny checked out. If I were you, I would just pop for the RPM Level 5, and never worry about it again.
Yeah I have the tranny at a transmission shop right now, they are going to install the new shaft for me, and inspect the tranny. However they quoted me $600 labor sound expensive or not?
Here is a pic, the shaft there in the middle is the one I broke. That shaft (hardened) is $550 from what Ive seen, anyone know of anywhere else cheaper?

So 550 for the input shaft, and 600 labor. A new RPM is $2100. If you get this one repaired, you'll be into $1100 +tax for a basically factory transmission. I might know someone who has a new RPM Level 5 sitting on the shelf in Cali. Would you be interested in the $1800-2000 range?
Well does the RPM come with the hardened shaft? On their site they list the 4 and 5 but then it has a hardened shaft as an upgrade. If it doesnt come with the hardened shaft then it would be pointless. Let me know, I might be interested. Where at in CA, new or used?
