I have been dealing with this nasty noise my car has started to make recently. It only happens when I am releasing the clutch, slowly too, like taking off from a stop light casually.
It is a snapping clicking sound that happens like every other second once, twice, three times until the car is moving. Even in first gear if the load comes off the motor, it will make this sound.
I have narrowed it to a bearing that has gone bad and reading some posts it seems that people having this problem had there entire differential replaced. I have a GMPP and a good shop to do work so I was wondering if anyone has experienced this.
Again, only when releasing the clutch from a stop does it do it, not puting the clutch in.
I do not have all the specifics on this fix but found some interesting information in searching the Tech section a few weeks back on bearing noise. Some posts reported clicking noised from the rear. Most were able to pin this down to lack of lubrication where the rear output shaft splines coming through the rear bearing hub assembly. One poster even had detailed pics on how to fix this. Most are just removing the large nut at the end of the bearing hub assembly and shooting some spray penetrating lube, motor oil, white lithium grease onto the splines of the output shaft so it migrates down the splines. This allows the shaft to move more freely in an out of the hub assembly. Re-torque axle shaft end nut to specs and problem gone. Good luck with it.
I have a similar noise in my car. Turns out, it's just the tunnel plate snapping when it gets hot. I have seen many vettes do it. Not sure if you have same issue. Just a thought to check out.
