I just recently bought 275/40/17 BFG DRs for 17" rims. IMO, I wouldnt wait for 18" DRs for the fact that you will give up sidewall flex when you go to a larger diameter rim translating to less traction. They come in the following sizes:
275/40/17 - Can use stock front 17" C5 rims.
315/35/17 - GS (or replicas) 17x11 rims are popular to mount on.
I hear Nitto's last longer, better in wet weather, but take longer to heat up and arent as "sticky."
I think the BFG 315X35X17 are the best with a nice wide surface to grip the track. Mine are installed on GS 17X11 with the 50mm offset, just slap them on and use your original lug nuts!
I tried a BFG 275/40/17 semi-worn. I smoked them off the line(track was less than perfect) but am going to try again with some 325-50-15's comparing to 26X10X16 M.T. Slicks. Lots use the BFG/Nitto with good results. Nice thing is, you can drive in, tech, adjust pressure, run, go home! Slicks or E.T. Stickies have to be chanced, PITA.
Don't wait for the 18" radials from Nitto....they're designed to fit the Ford Lightning. I'm using a pair of 335/35/17 BFG Comp T/A ZR's. They aren't drag radials, but they provide plenty of traction at the track.
