Default Excessive Wheel Speed Variation - Hub Replacement??

I have a 98 Coupe. Over the last few months, I've been getting ABS and Traction control alarms on the DTC. Thanks to this forum, I was able to check the fault codes. I'm getting fault C1227 which is excessive wheel speed variation on the left rear wheel. I thought it may have been because the tread wear on my back two tires were not even, so I replaced them(needed it anyway). This didn't fix the problem. I checked and cleaned the electrical ground connections. I checked and cleaned the connections between the wheel speed sensor and the EBTCM. I still had the problem. My local dealership is telling me that the hub assembly needs to be replaced. Do you agree? If so, how difficult of a job would this be? Any specialty tools required? Should I just let the dealership perform the replacement? I'm planning a trip to Bowling Green next week to do a factory tour and see the Museum and don't want any problems on the road. Your advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the reply lucky131969. I will update my information soon. I do have a multimeter, and the sensor does appear to be working. I do not get error codes that the indicate that the wheel speed sensor is open or closed. The dealership explained that slack in the hub was causing the variation in counts from the sensor.

I am still curious if you think that the hub replacement will fix the problem. I am also still curious if this is something that I can replace myself, or if it is difficult enough to have done at the dealership. Thanks!

If your hub is loose that could cause a variance in the wheel speed. The wave form coming from the sensor looks like a sine wave and if the hub is wobbling a little that will disturb the sine wave the EBTCM is seeing. Do you have any noise coming from that area of the car when driving down the highway? Try rocking the steering wheel back and forth slowly to get the car to transition back and forth across the driving lane. If you hear a moaning/whirring sound as you go right but not when you go left that is an indication you have a left side wheel bearing going bad.

It isn't exactly easy to replace a rear hub but it is within the capabilities of a home mechanic. It is also a lot cheaper if you do it yourself or go to someplace different than the dealership. The GM parts cost for the hub is $600+. Then you have to add the cost of labor. The same hub from Autozone is ~ $200.

i had the same problem- replace the wire harness to the sensor (it was about $50.00) the articulation point where the front anr rear wheels turn eventually breaks the wire inside the insulation and causes a high resistance and flags a code. it took about 5 minutes to replace the 2 wire harness!

GOOD LUCK!!!

btw, if you need a hub, advance auto parts carries the same one made for GM for about $100 dollars!
