I purchased a used hurst shifter from another member and today I got to install it. Problem is that when I run it through the gears, it catches 1-6 fine but there is not enough room to go further right and into reverse.. What gives?
The shifter looks brand new and has a gold base with front and rear stoppers, along with two allen type set screws on both sides of the shifter. I aligned it with the factory lock pin. I removed and re-installed it about ten times and still can't get it to go into reverse.. And no, it's not my first time installing a shifter..
Hi Bonestock, I was wondering if you had the install instructions w/your Hurst? In regards to adjustment/replacement of bias springs. Just in case you would like to get imput from Hurst tech . The phone # is (216) 688 8300 ext.500 Good luck Bob.

I appreciate your help, but I kinda figured it out. When I was going thru the gears, the car was off and ignition off. Once I turned the ignition ON, it went right into reverse. Weird but true. It will only go in reverse with the key in the ON position.
Oh well, what good is reverse if the car isn't ON anyways??
The car is equipped with a solenoid that prevents accidentally shifting into reverse when the car is moving more than 5MPH. That I do know, but I didn't know that you couldn't go in reverse with the key off, and the solenoid not "juiced"...

I didn't know that either. Actually with the stock shifter, it will go into reverse with the key on the OFF position.
It could be in the adjustment of the shifter mechanism using the neutral alignment pin during installation. I recently installed a B&M "Sport" shifter. I can easily shift into any gear with the key off/engine not running. The HURST also has the two adjustable shift point stops air gaps which could need adjusting along with the tension springs. All of the adjustments need to work together for the HURST to feel right.
