im getting ready to change the seals on my differential. ive noticed some oil mostly on the drive side. im planning on using cajundude write up http://www.cajundude.com/differential.htm. so my question are...
1. what seals do i need? ive read that there are inner and outer seals? i want to change all of them while everything is taken apart.
2. does anybody know what the part # are on these?
3. once i get everything off to the bare diff. how do i access the seal. is there a lid that just pops out? i dont think its mentioned on the write up
4. what kind of gear oil is recomended? i have about 67k on the car (not sure if it matters) im kinda leaning towards redline or royal purple.
Call your local GM dealer. Have him/her email or fax you an parts explosion W/description page. Select the numbers you want to change. My experience is C-5 axle leaks are common, and aftermarket (Will Fit Seals) arn't always up to the challange, one other beifit is, if the great gods @ GM feel they have a problem you will automatically get an updated part.
The seal part number is not listed, but I am sure you could tell any decent parts counter person you want differential seals for a C5 and they will give you the correct parts.

When I did mine a couple of months ago I got new GM output shaft seals, new o-rings for the covers and I used the GM red anerobic sealant as well. The biggest problem I had was the stud in the driver's side cover that mates to the transmission. I couldn't remove it to save my life using the double nut method, I ended up destroying it with a pair of vice-grips and just replacing it. Heating it with a torch would probably have done the trick, but of course I didn't have one available at the time. Just a little FYI.
BTW, the tube of anerobic sealant is sold in two sizes; a small one for about $8 (which is all you will need) and a larger tube for about $28 (which conveniently is all they had when I was there).
