Default Mystery engine compartment noise.

98 auto coupe..98k..stock!

During engine warm up a noise that was hard and loud had a cling clang sound came from the engine compartment. It was not the engine and I was not able to isolate the sound to a area except it was louder in the front of the compartment. Could this be a hvac issue with the A/C compressor and its clutch. Does the vette a/c setup have a clutch? Does the sound I hear mean a possible a/c system failure? After running the car 10-15 miles the sound went away. A/C system was not engaged but the heat was on in a dual zone hvac

Yes the AC has a clutch, but the noise you describe does not fit the bill.
Never heard of such a noise. The only thin metal under there would be the drive on the water pump.(clanging sound)
Open hood and get someone to start the engine and see if there is anything weird happening under there.
Could be something loose that you don't want loose.

It could be a small child from the neighborhood that you sucked up. Only kidding. wish I could help more.
