Default why the hell does second gear grind?

it only does it sometimes! i just got the sychro and gear replaced. i've driven other cars with T-56's and never had this problem. is this a vette thing only?

it just won't go entirely into second gear sometimes. when i let the clutch out a little bit, it pops the rest of the way in.

it happens with fifth gear sometimes also

I may be able to help, I run a transmission shop, and have been in the business for the past 28 years. I have way to many questions, that will change directions as answered, probably easiest to just call me. 360-452-9644 Ask for Dennis. Tell the receptionist it's about Corvette parts and she will let you through. Sorry can't answer everyone's questions, per phone. Wouldn't get my work done, but this one sounds a bit tricky.

What was the end reslut of this. Mine does this as well, seems worse when its cold.

I was thinking shift fork, but it has done it some much now I am concerned about the teeth on second gear shift collar and dog teeth.

Have you changed your transmission fluid? Your 1999 has paper blocker rings. I changed my 1998 to Mobil 1 and after 50,000 miles it started grinding going into 6th. I changed to Amsoil ATD and it immediately stopped.

amsoil, and c6 shifter got rid of my troubles, cold shifts 2nd and 4th were occasionally bad in mine , as well as getting into 1st at the light, kind of embarassing im sure some can relate

I emailed RPM and Six Speeds Inc. I got a respose this morning from Six Speeds Inc. Looks like an easy fix. The price is parts only.

I did change to Amsoil and it helped for about 1000 miles but is now back to the same old trick.

Troy,

Sounds like the 2nd gear blocker ring assembly is worn. If it was a shift fork since it controls both ½ it would do it in 1st gear as well as 2nd and would never get better. Also the same if the fork pads were worn. You will want to replace the 2nd gear inner cone, outer cone and blocker ring. Cost is $109.

Thank You,

Joe Huneycutt
