Default Be Cool Radiator in C5

Anyone used a Be Cool Radiator in your C5? How was the install? Want is your evaluation of the product? Did it make much difference in cooling?

Thanks,

Alan

I use it on my race car. Fits great and cools very nicely. Although the stocker should do for any street car, the Be Cool is a bargain if you need to upgrade.

Dave:

Thanks for the reply. As you say stock is great for street use I have not had a problem. I do run a little hot on the track on cool and mild days and am afraid of over extending on the hot summer days in the South so have not run during the summer, thus the question. I want to extend my season.

Thanks,

Alan

I have one in my car and I like it very much. The install is a piece of cake and the temps will stay consistantly cooler (194 to 199) with a computer programing change.

Thanks for the insight. Between Dave's racing point of view and your good experience, I will take the plunge.

Thanks again,

I have a Be-Cool in my FRC and it keeps both the coolant and oil temperatures a lot cooler on the race track. I've seen oil temperatures at the 190 drgree level an a hot summer day on the track, but the be-cool keeps the oil temp around 160 under the same conditions. Of course the coolent is much cooler also under race track conditions. If you want that added insurance for longer engine life, go for it! :yesnod: :yesnod:

Didn't realize so many of you are seeing some track action. You should safety wire the center air deflector so that it cannot fold under at high speed. GM designed it so that it will fold away if you run over something, but unfortunately high winde speed can do it also, severely decreasing air flow through the radiator at track speeds.

If you do A LOT of track events, you should "open up" the fan shroud with a hole-saw and remove the wiper cover/hood seal when at the track. The shroud and fan prevent air from free-flowing through the radiator, and the hood seal causes a parachute effect in the engine compartment, further reducing air entering the radiator.

Dave:

Thanks for the tips on keeping things cool. I've open up those two solid black pieces of plastic around the fog light area, which gets cooler air to the air filters and into the engine compartment. Is this the area you're referencing when you mentioned the fan shroud?, or do you mean the plastic that is sloping down in front of the radiator that seperates the radiator intake from the air cleaner box? or some other part of the shroud?

Also, do you think putting a seal at the leading edge of the hood would hurt or help anything, (cooling or aerodynamics). You mentioned the parachute effect, and if that area was not sealed off then some of the air entering the enging compartment from the "grill" area could exit at the opening as well as the opening at the rear of the hood by removing the wipercover/ hood seal. Thanks again for your tips. :)

Jim 47:

Your car is very similar to my setup, 99 Pewter FRC. I don't have the harness bar and 6 point belts. Are you using the stock seats, if so, how well do the belts work with them? How did you engineer the underside rear brake scoops? Radiator should be here tomorrow. Thanks.

Dave:

Thanks as always for the tips, I never would have thought about the front center air deflector. By opening up the fan shroud, are you referring to the shroud behind the radiator, i.e. cutting holes in the corners around the fans?

Take Care,

Alan

Alan33;

I got my be-Cool from Jegs 1 (800) 345-4545 or http://www.jegs.com ($492)

I have standard Hardtop seats, but my sholder belts have the sternum strap on them to keep them together across the chest. I got the belts with the sternum strap at Pagasus 1 (800) 688-6946 or http://www.pegasusautoracing.com :)

I forgot about the rear air scoops. I fashioned a 1.5"x6" scoop and attached it to the bottom of the spring on each side and ran a 2.5" sprial wound flexable heater hose from there , up through the lower "A" arm and out the leading edge of the lower "A" arm so it was pointing directly at the calaper. Everything is held on and together with tie raps and duct tape. Rather crude, but effective. The rears stay cooler. I can tell because I haven't cracked any more rear rotors since I put the scoops on.

They will stay on if you don't go off the paved serface of the track or drove on any highly crouned roads. Actually, I keep them on all the time.

JEGS is cheaper than directly thru BE-COOL. I like mine and it was an easy install. i did have to make 1 modification but it was so long ago I forgot what it was.Lower mounting point I think.

Jim:

I got the Be Cool from Jeg's also, it came today, looks good!!! Thanks for the rear brake cooling duct description, I will have to work on that one while I am putting all the other parts in. I think I have a good solution for the front brake cooling, will know if I ever get time to install it.

Take Care,

Alan

Does it bolt right up? I read posts here on problems getting the lines to connect because the BE-Cool Rad had incorrect fittings.

C5 Hardtop:

The Be-Cool that I got from Jegs fit perfectly including all hoses. The Be-Cool radiator is twice as thick as the factory radiator, so the clearances between the back of the fan shorud and the engine are a lot tighter. :D
