Default front main seal removal tool?

I can picture how I can press the new one in with the balancer installer tool but how do you get the old one out without risk of damage to timing cover or crank?

Take the timing cover off first of all and set it on a flat workbench or something and use large flathead screw driver with a hammer. You just punch it out from the other side and it'll come out no problem.

Installing a new one takes a little bit of time to make sure it's seated evenly. Luckily I had a seal installer from a universal kit and it went in easy... just make sure whatever you use is not sharp, and roughly the same size as the seal, preferably round, then you lightly tap it in (still on the work bench), it may require tapping various sides to get it right. Once it appears to be seated nicely I would use a press or a nice wood block and a hammer to get it in there..... then re install the cover and you're done.

This will give you the idea... just stay focused and don't rush like anything else and it will come out fine.

Default No way to "pull"it?

I am not that deep into the engine. I am only changing the damper/pullies, for a Novi install. Would hate to pull the timing cover if there is any way arround it.

I replaced mine, but I remove the cover. I don't know any other way. I'm sure you can probably get it off without removing the front cover, but you must be very careful. With the cover off, you can knock it right out from the inside.

Once you have the damper off, there's nothing to removing the front cover, I would just go the extra step and remove the it. Good Luck.

I think they make a tool for removal from the outside, but I can't remember where I saw it. I've done it on my Nissan truck without removing the cover. I think I used a thin piece of wire and hooked it around the back side to work it out. started the new one in and then used the crank bolt with a deep socket over it to press the new one in.

That's all from a very fuzzy memory....

However for the Nissan it was quite a bit more trouble to remove the cover... If the cover comes off with just bolts and no other hardware removal, I would remove the cover.

How many miles on your car? I mean, if you already have the rack out and the balancer off, it might be a good idea to do the chain, pump, and front seal. A little extra insurance considering your going with an SC.

Seal wasen't leaking but with new damper I figured the seal surface would be a bit different so would change it out.

Once the pulley is off, it's just a matter of removing the cover screws.

The other reason to remove the timing cover, is for reinstallation.

You want to have the timing cover loose when you press the pulley back on inside the seal. Start all the timing cover screws, but leave them loose. Then draw the pulley on.

The reason being, if the timing cover is loose, it is free to move around slightly, the seal will self-center itself around the pulley hub, which helps in preventing any damage to the seal lip. Once the pulley is in place, then tighten the timing cover screws.
