Default Any A/C Experts Here? Gap problem - Need help

I recently purchased a new ac compressor and had my original replaced. Except for the first time I tried, it would never kick on. Examining the compressor, it appeared that the gap in the clutch was way to big. Luckily, I was able to get a replacement at no cost. Well, I verified that the gap was good and had it swapped out. All seemed to be working. A couple weeks later, it is actually a warm day and the AC is not blowing cold. I get out and look at the compressor and it is not engaged. The gap is now just as large as the other one I sent back. Since then I haven't used it much, but sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

Has anyone else had this problem? How can the gap be 4-5x larger than it was when I initially had the compressor installed? Can the gap be corrected without having to remove the compressor?

Correcting the air gap on the clutch requires comp removal and several special tools. That air gap spec is 0.015 in, BTW.
I can't explain the air gap changing unless the rebuilder
did something wrong. Where are you getting the comps?
In any case, it should still be under warranty, but you
will probably have to eat the cost of install, evac,
recharge, etc. I know that sucks but the quality
of rebuilt compressors is not what it should be and,
while they will replace the part, the shop or owner usually eats the labor. HTH

Thanks for the reply. These compressors are supposed to be new (not rebuilt). I have been getting them from thepartsladi on ebay. Have ordered other parts from them without any problems and was pleased that they exchanged the other compressor. They told me that they haven't had any other problems with these compressors besides my case.

I was hoping that I could just have the gap adjusted and not have to go through the hassle of trying to get another replacement that will likely have the same problem. I have already paid for the install twice. At this point I wish I would have gone to a dealer and not tried to save money.

BTW, the compressors are ACDelco if that makes a difference.
