Since I didnt have alot going on this weekend I thought it might be a good time to replace the plugs and wires. The car (01 vert) w 45,000K probably didnt need this done but it seemed like a worthwhile way to spend a few hours. Iam a licensed aircraft mechanic and have worked on cars for years so Im not totally unfamiliar with working around tight spaces. This was the most time consuming plug change I have ever done due to the fact the old plug wires are such a bear to get off. The access is not that difficult if you have the right tools, but getting the old stuff off is a pain. Well its done and i will never own this car long enough to have to do it again. Anybody else had the same problems?
I'm at 36K miles. Have new plugs, wires and koolsox to put on but just haven't done it yet. Car runs fine and thats the only reason I haven't done it and just keep putting it off..oh yea the garage is 40 degrees right now so thats a big reason not to.....
Changed mine last year. It was like the boots were glued on. Got them off after wrestling with them for a while. New wires and plugs are in for a very long time.
Considering the plugs were more than 5 years old, I think it safe to say it was time.
I'm in the same boat as you experience wise (former Airline Avionics) and wrench for years. I've done plugs and wires on both my C5's, and I didn't think they were that bad. I just put on a good pair of gloves (hate the bloodied knuckles), and yank those wires off. They get destroyed, but I'm changing them anyway. I rather be doing plugs and wires on a C5, than pylon wiring on a 747....talk about tight
Yup, yank those old factory stuck on boots and put on a new set of wires This time lube the inside of the boots up with di-electric grease and they will come off much easier next time around.
I'm with you on this one. I didn't think access to the plugs was as bad as some say but getting the wires off was as hard as any I've done. I finally just used brute force since I had new wires anyway.

That is why when you install new wire you grease the inside of the boots so they can be easily taken off next time...
Something someone brought up is calender time on parts, many of these cars dont see many miles, but the parts are getting long in the tooth time wise. Some parts should be changed just do to the fact they have been on the car for a number of years now.
