Ok, now my grinding that was in 3rd moved to grinding in 3rd and 4th. I could get it to go in smoothly by babying it or double clutching taking quite a bit of time in the shift process (probably 3 seconds to move from 2nd to 3rd) results in no grind.
Now, the tranny gets stuck in 4th gear. I mean it will not come out with a very large amount of force.
I did powershift it a bit but only 1-2 shift. I have noticed the pedal engagement had been changing over the last several months. Clutch been releasing closer and closer to the floor.
Re: Shifter sticks in gear, possible problems? (HP-GURU)
I have had the same problem. Currently I'm on my 4th tranny, it's ben rebuilt 3 times in 30k miles:( Time to throw a brand new T-56 in I think.
Last time they blamed it on the shift dogs, but I've had better informed people on LS1tech.com tell me that it may be due to a problem with the shifter rail. I'm having it torn down again in a few weeks. E.mail me if you have any questions, I'd be happy to detail my past problems. Good luck!

Re: Shifter sticks in gear, possible problems? (1HoTTZ28)
If it only happens in 4th gear it's gotta be internal transmission unfortunately. Something in the shifting system is bent I guess. Prolly a bent fork or tweaked synchros. I had the same problem that eventually effected the ability to shift into all gears. I have a page of pictures of my tranny when it was last rebuilt if you'd like to take a peek.
Re: Shifter sticks in gear, possible problems? (C5Cemo)
You most likely have bent the 3-4 shift fork and probably have other damage as well. The T56 seams to suffer from cascading failures. i.e. one thing croaks then that leads to something else. I got GM to replace my transmission at 41,000 miles after two attempts to rebuild it failed. I had similiar problems as yours.
Re: Shifter sticks in gear, possible problems? (gonbad)
You said it, but I think it started with synchros.
I had a similar issue. It started on only the 1-2 shift, slight grinding at high rpm. Then worsened as 2nd gear started to fall apart. I'm running on a rebuilt 2nd right now with no problems.
Re: Shifter sticks in gear, possible problems? (HP-GURU)
HP-GURU,
Well, here's my 2 cents worth based on your description. I don't think your clutch is releasing. Sounds to me like it's dragging because the release point is getting very close to the floor. The fact that the shifts can be done by double clutching also lends my diagnosis, although that could mask bad synchros. I don't think the problem is in the tranny....I'd guess the slave cylinder (actuator) is bad, but you might try changing fluid and give it a bleed.
Re: Shifter sticks in gear, possible problems? (MDT)
I HAVE TO AGREE WITH MDT. AFTER DRIVING AND MODDING VETTES FOR APPROX. 30 YEARS, IT SOUNDS LIKE THE CLUTCH IS NOT FULLY RELEASING. I'VE GONE THRU THIS BEFORE. PLEASE START AT THE CLUTCH FIRST,ELIMINATE THIS...THEN MOVE ON. MAY SAVE YOURSELF SOME WORRY AND SLEEPLESS NITES. I KNOW IT FEELS LIKE ITS THE TRANNY, BUT I THINK THE SYMPTOMS POINT TO THE CLUTCH. BEST OF LUCK. :flag
Re: Shifter sticks in gear, possible problems? (HP-GURU)
Yes, I hope it is the clutch/slave area. I really do.
Is there any way to verify this? We have original clutch @61k miles with powershifting.
When the car does not want to come out of a gear, its like driving a car with a good tranny with load on tranny and trying to pull it out, it won't come!
The release point has been getting closer and closer to floor.
Initial pedal takeup feels like it does nothing at all for 2-3" of pedal. Thought this was air in hydraulics.
Re: Shifter sticks in gear, possible problems? (HP-GURU)
Dennis,
I didn't read your post closely enough to see that the clutch pedal was getting closer to the floor. Maybe it is the culprit. I'd check and/or change the fluid before going any further.
I still think it might be the synchros because it only happens in a few gears, not every one. Does anyone know why a clutch not disengaging could create this scenario?
Labor for clutch replacement and tranny removal should be the same as the tranny needs to be removed for either job. $800 labor is the lowest number I've been quoted.
