Default someone help me on a cam question?

Ok.I would like to get a bigger cam for my stock 01.Now,what am i looking for.Ok,Car has 44000 on it.We just drive the vette on nice days thats all do with it No dragin or track. We are not concern with the gas mileage for what ever i do with this thing.Im looking for a real nice looping and around 50 to 100 hp.Now,when i do this cam thing, the car is going to have lg long headers and corsa indy on it all ready. The main thing is i want a nice looping noise. Now im not looking for the biggest cam,or the next size up from what i got now.Somewhere in the middle. The other problem im having is,i do not know what i all need to complete this project.I want to get everthing together first to do the project, then i will take my car somewhere And have them put it togther for me then tune it.Does anyone know where i can get a package deal of all the stuff i need to do this project. Thanks for your time...Dan

Something between 224 and 230 i'd suggest I been looking at cams for a longtime now since your not at the track you dont need a huge cam you want something that will work good on the street. Look at the vengeance racing line of cams. I think i am going with the vrx3 cam from them when i get my tax refund

Do a cam search...there are a lot of threads on cam selection. And make sure you talk to a few performance shops and companies and get their suggestions. Choosing a cam can be difficult, but if you call some shops like ECS and Texas-speed or even comp cams, they can get a cam that fits your requests for drivability and performance. As for what is needed fo the total change. New pushrods, dual valve springs, retainers, i would do a LS2 timing chain while your in there. If your planning on doing an underdrive pulley in the future, now would be the time to do it. Not needed though. I think somewhere around a 228/228 duration and .588/.588 Lift cam should be a good performer and not be too aggressive. The LSA you choice will greatly effect how you want the cafr to idle. A say 110 or 111 LSA cam will idle rough. Go to around 113 114 will idle better with a little lump. Go higher in the numbers and the smoother you get. Just remember that a tune will be required after the cam swap. And do some searching on a reputible shop to do this for you. Good luck

IMO, You may want to consider a nice set of heads to go with that cam. For the looping your looking for(50/100hp) on an N/A motor you may need a bigger cam than your looking for without heads to compliment it.

An MTI G1 cam is 228/232 113+1. It works fine with your stock heads for now and you can go with AFR's later for more insane power. The G1 cam which I have seen now in many applications can have minimal TQ at 900rpms with a lot of timing at idle or a ton of lope at 800 with stock timing levels. Your low compression will also give it more lope. Later if you bump to 11.2:1 it will lope less but you can always lower the idle to get it where you want it.

If you are definitely going with heads then a G5X3 with AFR's will net you 20rwhp more with a great lope. Get it on a 112 LSA. This cam isnt going to maintain the TQ down low without a compression bump but it isnt night and day. It really needs better breathig heads than LS1's.

I agree. I have a H&C motor that gives about an additional 100HP. My 224/224 @ .566 114LSA is pretty smooth in my opinion, so you could go bigger than that. But be careful with how big you go depending on emissions requirements, once you get to 112, you may not be able to pass depending on where you live. Also, if you go with heads at the same time (good idea), watch compression, if you go much beyond 11:1 you *may* need higher octane than is available at the pump.

I agree with most of the above, certainly consider an under drive pulley and an oil pump upgrade since you are going to be right there with the cam install. I run a Comp 228/232 and its not too big for your setup. Make sure who ever does the install is C5 knowledgeable.

I'd go something around the 228/232 .588/.588 112LSA IF it is a 6-Speed. If you're running an auto, you're going to limit your cam selection because the car will try to push the brakes when you're sitting at a stop light. If you have ANY more questions please email me or shoot me a PM. I'd be glad to help ya out.
