Spoke to Midwest truck and auto recently (motive gear resellers) will be selling the motive ring and pinion for $275 in January.

Also here is c4c5specialist comment about the Getrag 625 diff that is in our cars:

"Getrag during training, they stated to us that the reason why they did NOT offer gears above and beyond the 3.73 was due to the fact that cutting that many teeth into the ring seriously degraded rated torque capacity.
Why that is might be due to the actual carrier design, which limits depth of the actual ring, so that there is not enought metal behind it to support the teeth.
Also, as a sidebar to this, GM recinded all instructions on overhaul of a c5 rear axle, due to the fact that side bearing preload could not be effectively duplicated. The reason being that there is a jig, by which actual side preload is measured. This jig costs GM about $1200 each, and felt that they did not want to pay that cost."

Wel that settles it, 3:73 gears are the way to go.

$1595 + core charge (or carrier return) for 3.90.

$1600 (keep or sell old carrier) for 3.73.

Looks like as long as I don't keep my old unit with the 3.73, I can sell it to recoup at least $500, dropping overall cost to $1100. :yesnod:

Off to the 3.73 GP! :yesnod:

I bet there are a lot of 2.73's in people garage that could be used as a core. All they want is the housing.

I haven't heard of ANY problems with 3.73 gears. Those 3.90s sound sweet. If it were me to do again, I'd most likely go with the 3.90 .

Who is going to manufacture the 3.90 gears ?
The 3.73 gears are made by Getrag, the OEM supplier for the C5. Hence, there should be no reliability concerns.

It's been my experience that higher numerical gears tend to whine as mileage increases.

The 3.73:1 complete unit you can get is assembled by Getrag and is excellent quality and assembly. For 1600 without exchange, its not a bad deal.

The gears like I posted above, from motive gear, would need to be assembled (not that big of deal) into existing carriers. For 275 bucks for the ring and pinion retail, thats pretty cheap. Thus you can get a 2.73, 3.15 or 3.42 carrier and you have a cheap set of 3.73, 3.90, or 4.10 gears.

Not sure what the nonsense price of $1595.00 (with exchange too boot) for 3.90s, breathless says they will offer.

kewlbrz, ditto on the motive gears, 4.10's for me! How much do you think it'd be to have that installed? I thought special Kent-Moore tools were needed to set these up? Thanks, man!

motive gear has bearing, gasket etc kits availble for thier ring and pinions. I dont think special tools would be needed unless we are talking manufacturer precision tolerances for warranty purposes. Last I head c4c5specialist say about it, he agreed.

What gears would you be going with kewlbrz? Would this gear change give us bolt-on LS1's an edge on stock ZO6's? BTW, what do you think a 2.73 gear set should go for? Thanks.

Id say a 4.10 gear with cold air, and aftermarket exhausts, would put a 99+ LS1 6speed extremely close to a 01 Z06. An LS1 with headers too, would put it right there with a 02 Z06.

Used 2.73 gears are bascially worthless right now since the ring pinion sets are not actually out. I'd put a price of about 150-200 on them.

Kewlbrz, does that price indicate the 2.73 carrier so we can keep our 3.42 carrier and swap the new 4.10's in the 2.73 carrier? That's what I meant to ask. Thanks.

yeah, I was assuming set your 3.42's aside, and get a used 2.73 carrier and put the ring and pinion in of your choice.

Im learning the 2.73 and 3.15 carrier is smaller with a lesser torque rating then the getrag 3.42 and 3.73 housing.

Il post more when I find out. Not that this would be an issue overall.

Ive learned that the 2.73, and 3.15 carriers are in fact smaller and arnt rated to take the stress the 3.42/3.73 carrier can, and fracturing and cracking can occur under a heavy load.

Also that the aftermarket gears are really designed to go into the 3.42/3.73 carrier.

So looks like using a 3.42 or getrag 3.73 aftermarket carrier is really the only viable option.
