Also here is c4c5specialist comment about the Getrag 625 diff that is in our cars:
"Getrag during training, they stated to us that the reason why they did NOT offer gears above and beyond the 3.73 was due to the fact that cutting that many teeth into the ring seriously degraded rated torque capacity.
Why that is might be due to the actual carrier design, which limits depth of the actual ring, so that there is not enought metal behind it to support the teeth.
Also, as a sidebar to this, GM recinded all instructions on overhaul of a c5 rear axle, due to the fact that side bearing preload could not be effectively duplicated. The reason being that there is a jig, by which actual side preload is measured. This jig costs GM about $1200 each, and felt that they did not want to pay that cost."

$1595 + core charge (or carrier return) for 3.90.
$1600 (keep or sell old carrier) for 3.73.
Looks like as long as I don't keep my old unit with the 3.73, I can sell it to recoup at least $500, dropping overall cost to $1100. :yesnod:
Off to the 3.73 GP! :yesnod:

The 3.73 gears are made by Getrag, the OEM supplier for the C5. Hence, there should be no reliability concerns.

The gears like I posted above, from motive gear, would need to be assembled (not that big of deal) into existing carriers. For 275 bucks for the ring and pinion retail, thats pretty cheap. Thus you can get a 2.73, 3.15 or 3.42 carrier and you have a cheap set of 3.73, 3.90, or 4.10 gears.
Not sure what the nonsense price of $1595.00 (with exchange too boot) for 3.90s, breathless says they will offer.

Used 2.73 gears are bascially worthless right now since the ring pinion sets are not actually out. I'd put a price of about 150-200 on them.

Il post more when I find out. Not that this would be an issue overall.

Also that the aftermarket gears are really designed to go into the 3.42/3.73 carrier.
So looks like using a 3.42 or getrag 3.73 aftermarket carrier is really the only viable option.
