You know when changing the oil, removing the filter always makes a mess. Here is a tip I've been using for years. Take a medium size nail and with a hammer punch a hole in the center of the bottom of the oil filter. Position the catch pan and pull the nail out and let the filter drain, then remove the filter. For me, it works much better than the Walmart plastic bag trick.
Or you can put a screwdriver thru it and use it to turn the filter
On my old chevy impala I had an oil filter refuse to untighten. Using an oil filter wrench only succeded in causing the outer shell to collapse as I twisted it counterclockwise.
Solution:
A medium sized screwdriver right thru the filter coming out the other side. Horizontally not vertically. Then I had enough torque to twist the beast loose and finally off.
Not the cleanest job but it worked.
I now tighten all oil filters about 3/4 to 1 turn past first contact with the base.
At 1 turn it WILL COME OFF and it WON'T leak. Have oiled the street before this and thats probably why I had my filter on too tight. BIGHANK
...... but crack the filter loose before you punch the hole. In case that filter decides not to come off, you still have the option of driving the car to the shop.
