Default How to fill the automatic trans??

I have the trans out of the car. I am changing the gears and converter. I need to know where to fill the transmission with fluid. There are a number of fittings, and I don't want to over or underfill it. The owners book says dealer????I'm not going there. Does anyone have a picture showing the fill plug?

Thanks! I am almost ready to re-intall the new converter and take it to the tuner.

You need to have the car running and on a lift or stands to do this properly. The fill plug is on the driver's side of the pan. Here's the SM procedure for checking the fluid level. It's essentially the same for filling it. I did this last summer when I installed a TC and gears in my wife's C5. Pain in the butt but no other way to fill it properly. You can certainly pre-fill it partially before installing it but you'll need to follow the procedure to have the level correct.

1] Start the engine and allow the engine to idle until the transmission fluid temperature has reached the value specified.

2] Depress the brake pedal and move the shift lever through the gear ranges, pausing a few seconds in each range. Return the shift lever to the PARK range.

3] Raise the vehicle on a hoist. The vehicle must be level with the engine running and the shift lever in the PARK range. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

Caution
The engine must be running when the transmission fluid fill plug is removed, or excessive fluid loss will occur. Transmission fluid may be hot. Since the actual fluid level is unknown, stand clear when removing the fill plug. Have a container ready to capture any lost fluid. Do not turn the engine off with the fill plug removed, as you can be injured by hot transmission fluid being expelled out of the oil fill opening.

4] Remove the transmission plug.

Important
The transmission fluid may darken with normal use and does not always indicate contamination or oxidation.

5] Check the fluid color. If necessary, use a small screwdriver as a dipstick.

6] Fill it until it begins to dribble out of the drain plug hole.

FYI MM6/M12:

Fill plug is about halfway up the driver's side of the trans. You should fill it until it starts to dribble out of the fill hole. Note - the pressure sensor is the plug in the Z06.

Drain/fill plug is on the drivers side of the tranny oil pan towards the rear end. When the AT is at the correct level, engine warm & running at idle in park, the ATF is at the edge of the drain hole.

Many people fill it with a hand crank oil pump thru the drain hole. I initially filled it by the cooler return line at the radiator and adjusted as required.

Either way, look out for the HOT exhaust pipe next to the drain plug.

This is the way I like to do it, so it's not running dry.

Fill the tranny up with the fill hole as shown above before starting the car. Then start it and let it run for a short period just to suck up the fluid you have in the pan, probably about 10-15 seconds, and then shut it back off, and add some more fluid. Keep doing this until you can't add anymore with the motor off. Then you can start it and let it run while you fill it the rest of the way up and let it warm up. Shift thru the gears too, leaving your foot on the brake. You don't need to spin the rear wheels.
I think it takes about 12 quarts (Without looking in the book).
